So I need some advice on my current situation;

I am planning on attending SGU in the fall for an MD/MPH, but I am still on the waitlist at my number 1 choice school (in the US).
I received a call from my number 1 a few weeks ago letting me know that I was close to the top, and was I still interested, to which I replied "YESSS"

But right now I have to start getting ready for SGU - they want registration forms, health forms, etc.. and now I just a received a bill for the first term that they want paid in July.

I don't know what to do right now with this; I need to apply for loans for SGU, and I'm worried that I will do all that and then get accepted to my number 1. or I'll wait too long before applying for loans in hopes that ill be accepted and then wont get accepted...

What do people do? I've heard of people getting accepted like the 1st week of classes, but how does that work when you need to get loans/pay for tuition a few weeks before classes start?
If i apply for loans for SGU and then get accepted elsewhere, can I cancel my loans? I just don't know what to do.

Thank you so much for any advice!

If you got an interview and waitlist spot for your number 1 choice, why not reapply to US MD??? Why give up and go Caribbean after only one try? Unless you've tried like three application cycles already?

It is pushing into the end of June and I would say waitlist movement will pretty much be nonexistent by the first of July. I would definitely make plans for SGU as waitlists are so unpredictable. Even if they told you you were near the top, you are not sure if there are still a dozen people ahead of you. I would give your waitlisted school another call to inquire about if any movement will be happening soon and to give them a heads up about when you need to finalize your plans to SGU.

Thank you for your advice, I'll call admissions on Monday.

Please please consider reapplying if it would mean you could get things together in the next few weeks. Did you apply early last time? Honestly, it's worth waiting a year or two for a choice that will impact all future decisions down the line (travel home during breaks/emergencies, clinical rotations, residency placement, fellowship placement etc etc etc).

You should really consider reapplying again - hard numbers are decent enough.
You only applied to 10 schools? No way to apply more broadly (i.e. credit cards if emergency)?

One year isn't that big a deal in the grand scheme of things.

Withdraw from SGU and reapply US MD/DO if you don't get off the waitlist.

Waitlist at your "top" school and going to SGU? Sure.

This was my 3rd time applying to US Schools, so yes, I will be going offshore if I don't get accepted.
I received a scholarship for SGU that they only give to 50 ppl, so I'm already on top, and I want to do peds or family medicine so I think i will be ok for residency.

Please I really nead advice on the loans though..

Are you getting private loans, I'm assuming? Call a loan company and ask.

You're going to SGU with a 3.9/29? You're guaranteed a DO acceptance and you will probably get into MD if you apply broad enough. Your 50 people scholarship means nothing. They are giving it to you so that you go there and give them your money because they know you can stay in the US if you are intelligent about applications.

Carib is for people with a 2.9/25, or people who refuse to do DO because of they want "MD" on their white coat. Very good odds that you won't even graduate if you go down there.

ouch. Well, best of luck

I'm pretty sure that they get the same loans as us. The big 3 are eligible for government financial aid.

Yes for the fall term I will be getting private loans because I'm doing my MPH classes then and those aren't covered by govt loans like the MD classes.

Yeah Ill have to call Sallie Mae about it, i was just looking for firsthand experience.

3.97-------->>> Caribbean :wow:

Edit: Since you want to get an MPH anyway, why not stay in the US and attend a PH school while strengthening your app (retake MCAT, etc.)? Then reapply.

^^^^^

If anything, you're a shoo-in for DO schools, and I'm fairly certain I'm in good company when I say US DO > Caribbean MD
Yeah, there is absolutely no reason to choose Caribbean MD over DO. Your impatience in going Caribbean instead of applying again will hopefully not prevent you from getting a residency and ever practicing medicine.

OP, I realize that you are a 3rd time applicant, but from what I've read, didn't you only apply to like 5 or 6 surrounding area schools each year? You are set on going to the carribean so you are obviously willing to go out of state now. Why not reapply next year and actually try applying broady (20-25 schools)?
