Hey everyone,

I have matched into a 6 year oral and maxillofacial surgery residency. What this means is I am required to take part I of the USMLE to gain advanced standing in medical school (begin with year 3). I have 1 year until I have to take USMLE step I. My question to you guys is since I don't have the extensive year 1 and year 2 medical school didactic background (I've been in dental school) what do you think the best study resource is?

Currently I have first aid 2009, first aid cases, first aid Q&A. Also I plan on using USMLE world the NBME exams and an additional source for pathology (Golijan or BRS). However, seeing that I have 1 year is the Kaplan review series more of a comprehensive review. I guess what I’m looking for is more in depth material rather than raw bullet points since I've never seen lots of this material before.

Any suggestions 🙂?

It sounds like you might benefit from one of those extensive prep courses offered by Kaplan or Falcon (Goljan teaches for Falcon so that'd be my choice). They basically cram 2 years of med school down your throat in 6-7 weeks. Since you have a similar foundation, you're probably strong enough to handle the course, but this would present you with the high yield material and make sure you're on the right track.

Definitely use First Aid to Guide your study, but it's not comprehensive, it's more of an outline. Goljan Rapid Review is a strong pathology review, it should help a lot and it's high yield.

Other texts you'd want to consider:
-Something for Biochem (I'm probably going to use Lippincott's full or BRS, I know Goljan has a Rapid Review biochem but I already have access to the other two so check out the 3, they're all probably pretty good)
-BRS Physiology (Concise and high yield)
-First Aid is probably all you need for Pharm (but know it cold)
-High Yield Neuro (but this really only works if you have a strong neuro foundation, you might need something better)
-High Yield Behavioral (probably all you'd need)
-Clinical Microbiology Made Ridiculously Simple (hands down the best text for the topic)
