Hello, this is my first post and I'm trying to get some opinions from people who are already in OPT school or those more familiar with the application process who could give me a realistic assessment of my chances. And maybe my situation can be used as reference to others who are in a similar case.
**All GPA's posted here are according to the scale that my university uses and NOT the Optcomcas scale**
I'm from a Canadian university and completed my Honors B.sc in Biology in 2010.
During my first 2 years of undergrad...I did very poorly.
GPA in 1st year was 1.9 and 2nd year was 2.8. I have an F in calculus, D's, and C's galore in several science classes including general biology, genetics, cell biology. It's not pretty. My chemistry is ok, with general chem and organic chem at 3.5.
GPA in 3rd year was 3.55 - upper level biology courses mostly
GPA in 4th year was 3.75 - upper level biology courses mostly
GPA in 5th year was 3.91 - included courses such as human anatomy, mammalian and human histology, and social science courses. All courses senior level.
I will be enrolling again this fall as a part time student to take calculus, microbiology, english, and thermochemistry. These are the last prereqs I need for optometry and pharmacy. I am confident I'll be able to pull a 3.7 gpa in these courses.
So all in all, my GPA will be 3.2, but my science GPA won't be as high, especially because of the basic science courses that I did so poorly in.
In terms of ECs...I have volunteer experience, locally and internationally, worked all through undergrad to pay for tuition, community service, etc. Nothing special.
I haven't taken the OAT yet, but I am studying for that now and will write in August.
So what do you guys think?
Also, is it possible I can submit my optcomcas application even though I will be completing prereqs during the 2011-2012 school year? I can have my essays, LORs, OAT and all that done by Christmas time, but some prereqs won't be done until the end of the school year...April 2012.
