Hi everyone! I am actually new to this forum so sorry if I am asking a question that has been previously answered. I am actually a pre med student who realized pre pharm is more for her. I graduated from the University of Virginia last May 2010. Since then, I have been working for a consulting firm focusing on public health. I am now thinking about applying to pharmacy schools this upcoming cycle. I need to take Anatomy I and II, Microbiology, and Statistics. Otherwise I should be good to go. I am planning on taking Anatomy this summer and the others in the fall at a community college. My science GPA right now is about a 3.3 and overall GPA is a 3.5. I have great leadership experience. Furthermore, I have been a Research Assistant for Neurooncology lab for two years and a RA for a psychology lab for about one semester. I just wanted to see what else I could do to help myself for this upcoming cycle to make myself a better applicant. Thanks so much.

Have you taken the PCAT?

Which schools are you applying to?

Have you ever worked/volunteered in a pharmacy?

Have you ever shadowed a pharmacist?

Are the pre-reqs you have listed for one school you are currently considering?

UVA doesnt have a pharmacy program.
I will be taking the PCATs in October.
I have shadowing one pharmacist for about 40 hours.
I have not worked at a pharmacy

Have you thought about working in a pharmacy?

It's good to have some work experience, but only if it doesn't get in the way of your studies and pre-reqs.

Yeah I have but I work full time right now and I need that money to pay for the rest of my pre reqs and loans for undergraduate. Would I be at a great disadvantage? I think my science GPA will go up with the rest of the pre reqs that I have to take. I have plenty of volunteering experience as well. I volunteered every summer and throughout my undergraduate career.

Not really, since a lot of your classmates will also have no prior work experience in a pharmacy. I just thought it could be an option if you weren't working.

It helps sometimes when professors and pharmacists discuss medications and typical patients that take them.

Are you focused on applying to one school or few schools? It seems that way from the pre-reqs that you have listed for next year.

Well, I graduated from UVA so I completed most of my pre reqs there. I am taking the rest at a community college. I will probably apply to all Virginia schools, Howard University, and in NC and up north. I am pretty open to where I go.

A really good PCAT score would be a nice addition to your portfolio but from what you listed up there you seem like a strong candidate to me.
