Not sure if this is where it goes, but basically I'm wondering what my options are with a subpar USMLE step 1 score (<210). I'm looking for any suggestions on how to improve my chances of landing IM in NYC. Any tips/advice would be appreciated.

rock step 2, do aways and really impress people, get great letters, etc.

basically make the rest of your application the best it can be.

I'm def going to try and do all of that. I guess my concern/other question is whether my chances of getting IM in NYC are very low because of the Step 1 score

Looking at the PD directors survey for 2010, I see that 203 is the score below which, it is claimed, that IM programs generally do not grant interviews. The response rate was about 44% for IM programs and I bet they were the better ones. I don't think you should have a problem just based on your Step 1 score.

As others have said, make the rest of your application as good as it can be. There really is no secret formula to it--either you have the grades, scores, letters, and interview ability to pick your location, or you do your best and widen your idea of what an "acceptable" location would be.

To state the obvious, going completely unmatched would be much worse than matching outside of NYC. Regardless of what your step score is, I would recommend looking hard at other IM programs at least nearby and deciding what would be acceptable.
