I've already posted this before in the general allopathic section but again am unsure if that was the right place to post it. Not sure if this is where it goes, but basically I'm wondering what my options are with a subpar USMLE step 1 score (<210). I'm looking for any suggestions on how to improve my chances of landing IM in NYC. Does that score make my chances pretty much impossible? Any tips/advice would be appreciated.

I'm basically trying to get a general feel for my situation so I can plan accordingly.

If you apply broadly, I think you could get in somewhere. There are some community hospitals in New York that will take an applicant with those scores. Are you an IMG? If so, you'll have to apply to a large number of IM programs to get in somewhere. If you're an AMG, I don't think it should be a problem.

1. Don't cross-post. It's against the TOS and it pisses off the mods.

2. Your Step 1 score is about 5% of your overall application (albeit a major issue with screening). You Step 1 score will (or won't) get you interviews. Getting a spot is dependent on a lot of other things. What else you got?

3. "IM in NYC" is a pretty broad category. You're not going to Columbia unless your dad is the PD. There are also about a dozen community programs in NYC that will reject you for being overqualified if your Step 1 is >200 and you passed it on the first attempt. So the likelihood of matching "IM in NYC" approaches 100% for anyone with a pulse, passing scores on the Steps and a medical degree. Where you match is a completely different story.

4. You are not a special flower. Do a search in this forum and in the IM forum and I bet you'll find a dozen or more threads asking almost exactly the same question.
