I need to find a one month elective in EM on fairly short notice (ideally I want to do this in Jan, Feb at the latest). The elective needs to involve at least a dozen 12 hour shifts over the course of the month. I'm trying to figure out if I want to do EM so I'm looking for somewhere that's busy, lets the students do a lot, and and has a lot of interesting pathology (i.e. I'm not looking for a vacation). I need to drive to this and live in Louisiana, so the SE is best. Does anyone have any suggestions about good programs to apply to?

are you a third year?

Yes, 3rd year medical student. I need the elective in a hurry because the scheduling lottery went very badly for me and EM is one of the only core classes we don't need to do at our school. So far I've done Medicine, Family, Surgery (in progress), 2 weeks of Ortho Trauma, and Psych.

I strongly suggest an externship at UF Jacksonville. County-style, lots of student involvement, certainly busy. 15 x 8hrs in a month, 4 resident conferences, several student workshops including simulations, and a day at the zoo (good experience).

I would just start emailing programs nearby. You're probably not going to get to be picky and pick the best and busiest programs.

You may have a very hard time finding somewhere that will take 3rd year students at all. Most programs only allow 4th years for away rotations.

Here is a thread that discusses this issue and lists a few schools that accept 3rd years: http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=774687

Can you take EM at your own school? That is probably your best bet.

Angel is right about it being tough to find an ms 3 spot. And those all require that you have taken Im, surge and fm...which you have. Just make sure you do your clerkship somewhere that has an em residency program, otherwise the slor you get won't help much. Lsu has three programs, I'd start there.
