Quick, stupid question. Not in medical school yet, but upon completion, must you complete a year long internship then the specific number of years of the residency of choice and then fellowship if one so chooses. Thanks guys.

It depends on the specialty. Some don't really start until the 2nd-year after you graduate and require an internship year (e.g., radiology, anesthesiology, orthopedic surgery, urology, etc), while others don't (e.g., internal medicine, psychiatry, family medicine, etc.).

Anesthesia is a 4 year residency, total. Some programs train you all 4 years, others only 3 years, yet others have both 3 and 4 year spots.
