Hello All:
I’m an African American pre dental student wanted to get some feedback on applying to dental school. A little about myself:
DAT:
-TS: 16
-AA: 17
-PAT: 20
Ochem killed my TS/AA (ran out of time) and got a 14 in that (I know *tear*).

AADSAS calculated GPA:
-Science: 2.67
-Non science: 3.03
-Overall: 2.81

I first applied last year only to one school. Got an interview, but didn’t get in. I sent my app in late October, interviewed after the first batch of acceptances in December, and got rejected. Hindsight, I should have probably applied to more schools, but I honestly couldn’t afford it. I took post bac courses to improve my gpa and it has improved over seven years from very low (1.45) to 4.0. I had to work two jobs through school, so my GPA took a hit.
I have extensive community service hours with volunteer work at dental clinics, a wonderful letter of recommendation from a dentist I shadowed along with a committee letter. I’m even the Founder of a dental organization at my university and was also the President of the biological honor society. This may not be related to dentistry, but I included that I graduated high school early and obtained my cosmetology license and worked this job while in undergrad. I noted in my personal statement that this is where the majority of my manual dexterity skills come from.
My fear is with my stats, I won’t have a chance. But I’m holding onto the fact that I have extensive shadowing experience and have proven that I want to be a dentist. Hopefully, the committee’s will see how much I have overcome and will keep me under consideration. Are there any particular schools that give preference to someone that has extensive volunteer and service hours? Any feedback would be helpful 🙂 Thanks

Your extracurriculars sound good, but having both a low GPA *and* DAT are going to kill your chances even if you apply broadly. You need to plan on retaking the DAT and hopefully destroying it. You already did post-bacc work, but at first glance your gpa is still dismally low. Good luck in everything!

Meharry , Howard, state schools.

Where did you receive your one interview last cycle?

What classes did you take that are part of the 4.0?

How did you study for the DAT? Are you able to throw some money at the DAT study issue, by buying a few of those fancy programs mentioned in all of the breakdowns? It still takes a significant effort, but it's worth considering.

Don't waste your money applying. Retake the DAT and raise your GPA and have that application ready for the first batch next year.

yeah, those DAT scores look a little too low, even considering URM status and the schools you can apply to.
Get yourself together and improve it to mayb 19~20 ish!

Try to retake the DAT three part under 19 is bad!!

I took Biochemistry II and Analytical Chemistry. I'm definitely ordering the Organic Chemistry as a Second language you suggested and Chad's Videos. They helped me the first time. I already scheduled a new DAT date for October.
