Hello All:
I’m an African American pre dental student wanted to get some feedback on applying to dental school. A little about myself:
DAT:
-TS: 16
-AA: 17
-PAT: 20
Ochem killed my TS/AA (ran out of time) and got a 14 in that (I know *tear*).
AADSAS calculated GPA:
-Science: 2.67
-Non science: 3.03
-Overall: 2.81
I first applied last year only to one school. Got an interview, but didn’t get in. I sent my app in late October, interviewed after the first batch of acceptances in December, and got rejected. Hindsight, I should have probably applied to more schools, but I honestly couldn’t afford it. I took post bac courses to improve my gpa and it has improved over seven years from very low (1.45) to 4.0. I had to work two jobs through school, so my GPA took a hit.
I have extensive community service hours with volunteer work at dental clinics, a wonderful letter of recommendation from a dentist I shadowed along with a committee letter. I’m even the Founder of a dental organization at my university and was also the President of the biological honor society. This may not be related to dentistry, but I included that I graduated high school early and obtained my cosmetology license and worked this job while in undergrad. I noted in my personal statement that this is where the majority of my manual dexterity skills come from.
My fear is with my stats, I won’t have a chance. But I’m holding onto the fact that I have extensive shadowing experience and have proven that I want to be a dentist. Hopefully, the committee’s will see how much I have overcome and will keep me under consideration. Are there any particular schools that give preference to someone that has extensive volunteer and service hours? Any feedback would be helpful 🙂 Thanks
