i am curious to know if there is a need for assistants in private practice psychology and in hospitals. i know there are many kinds of med techs that go to a 1-2 yr school to receive certification (eg. radiology technicians).

is there a need for train psychometricians? a need for assistants to clinical psychology?

I saw job postings in Boston for Psychometricians. Requirements were, as I recall, BS or BA in Psych and some experience with psychiatric populations.

with so many psychology undergraduates "stuck" following graduation, would there be a demand for a 6 month - 1 year psychometrician/assessor certification school?

While I'm sure the masses of hapless, unemployed college grads with psych degrees would love this, I just don't see how it would work. I doubt there'd be enough demand in the mental health care industry to support this, considering how many fairly low-paid professionals with graduate degrees (e.g., msw) are already available. Also, how much could you really learn in a 6 month- 1 year program? Psychology is just not analogous to radiology.

Maybe the real problem is that a lot of undergrads fall back on psychology as a major (because it's inherently interesting and not that hard at the undergrad level), fail to research its career prospects, and then act shocked when they can't find a well-paying job in the area when they graduate. Psychology is the #1 major at many universities these days. The discipline simply can't support all those graduates.
