hi i'm a 3rd year student and as i'm getting ready for the PASS application to open this may, i'm wondering if you need a good gpa for AEGD?

i have a little sub-3.0 gpa as i tend to concentrate more clinically than didactically. however, as i look at the requirements on the PASS website of various locations, most(if not all) of the AEGD programs i searched so far didn't require a transcript, just a pass of NBDE I at time of application, and completion of NBDE II and dental degree by time of entrance. actually some required pre-doctoral undergrad transcript, but none required dental school transcript.

help me understand if i'm missing something, do they require dental school transcript at some point during the application? or after you get accepeted into aegd already? and most important-do you need a good gpa for AEGD? thanks

Do you need good grades if you want to get into ANY AEGD? No...

Obviously some programs are more competitive than others (VAs, some dental schools) and they will likely be looking for higher stats. I matched into a VA AEGD with a 3.2ish and low 80s board scores.

However, if you're just looking to do any old AEGD you should be ok...

PASS will has a transcript request section. You will have to submit a transcript from dental school through PASS. Most programs have their own requirements as well and will require you to even send Undergrad transcripts.

AEGDs are all different and have different requirements. Some programs weigh heavily on GPA or"board scores" which was how it was when I applied. Other weigh more heavily on character and references. Some are looking for a person who is a really good fit and will mesh well with the other residents.

I applied to one program for example and the interview didn't even matter. They created a spreadsheet and ranked you by class rank, GPA, and board scores. Then they just went down the list until the spots were full.

I got into a great program and am very excited. There are a lot of programs out there you just need to apply to a lot and then decide what the best program is for you. Everyone who applied to GPR or AEGD in our class got into the program of their choice.

AEGD's usually have open spots even in June. They are not particular about grades so don't worry.

Depends on the type of AEGD. Like someone already mentioned, VAs and SOME dental school AEGD programs are competitive. Some of the more popular AEGD programs among students will obviously be the most sought after and, hence, more competitive.

Another thing about AEGD/GPR (and probably other programs) is their history of accepting US vs International dentists. One of the bese AEGD programs (in my opinion anyway) is UConn but their director accepts mostly international graduates (also means that the school doesn't have to pay these graduates, unlike the ones from US/Canada).

Your priority in terms of AEGD should be
1.Type of clinical experienc
2-Location
3-US vs international grads
4-Salary

That's just my opinion.🙂

I totally agree. Also, AEGDs in general are waaay easier to get into than GPRs. I definitely never planned on doing residency; my resume is totally average since the day I got into dental school. I barely studied for Part I. I was also super afraid I would never match where I wanted, the bay area. But I ended up applying last minute to AEGDs and I was surprised I got my first choice! Pleasantly surprised! I really wouldn't worry too much about getting into AEGD programs, but GPRs are definitely a few notches more competitive.
