Hey guys,

I mentioned this in an earlier post, but I didn't ask for advice. I just finished my first year of university with a GPA of 2.5-2.7. I know. Pretty bad. And, as lame as it sounds, I am not going to let anything stop me from getting into dental school. The big issue is the GPA right now. I need it to go up to above a 3.0 in a 3 year span. First, can I do it? and Second, what can I do throughout the term to boost my GPA? I've heard that daily review for a minimum of 2 hours/lecture is helpful, but what else can I do?

Thanks

It is definitely possible to get your gpa over a 3.0..but you must be focused and work hard. Besides reviewing the material, you can go to office hours either with TA's or the prof to go over the material you don't understand. Furthermore, study wisely and make notes from the prof's lecture notes.

Good luck! :xf:

it does sound lame but at least you're motivated

so let me get this straight...you're asking a forum of anonymous people who don't know you, if you can get your GPA above a 3.0/if you have what it takes?

daily reviews are nice if you're behind but it's really not that complicated. You shouldn't be spending an extra 2hrs/lecture if you can grasp the concepts in the first place. Take Ochem for example, my class recently went over keytones and aldehydes...I read the chapters about them before the lecture and was able to pick up/clarify the subject a lot better than some of my friends and peers. Learning isn't hard, just find the most effective strategy for you that will make you understand the concepts.

Your GPA is low. Even though it seems sh*tty right now, you can still salvage it. Firstly, you're a freshmen and you don't have a lot of units...this is a good thing because your GPA isn't "set in stone" as much as other ppl. Start acing everything from here on out and there's no reason for why you can't get above a 3.5 by the end of senior year (let alone a 3.0). Secondly, an upward trend makes for a good story and looks good on your DS app.

Best of luck!

I definitely think the way you do because I'm on the same boat...you can do it, just stay focused....it's helping me

it depends. u have to know ur own ability. i had a 2.96 in freshman year but i know i slacked off and could've done better so i worked my ass off the next 3 years and my gpa is now ~3.6.

succeeding in college depends on more than just ability however, u must also learn to be resourceful. get notes, past exams, advice from friends and like the above poster said, go to office hours. not only to get help but to kiss ass (especially in writing/soc sci/humanities classes where the profs grade ur papers),

I don't see how so many people want to be a dentist and not want to work hard...I dunno, maybe it's just me though.

I think that pretty arrogant of you...Just becuase he messed up doesnt mean hes lazy..I failed a year of college..Have 2 publications, working on one more finishing a master and reapplying to dental school with solid DAT scores...So I guess that means becuase I messed up along the way im lazy too???

No, but that just shows that others have truly worked harder than you to get there if they didn't fail a year.
