I realize that I really spend too much time studying. Seems like I don't study efficiently. I'd appreciate some tips on how to study "smarter."

I am a biochem transfer student and currently go to a UC Davis. I am getting all A's (knock on wood), but the thing is that I spend way too much time on school work. I do put time for things such as hanging out, working out etc but it usually comes at the expense of not sleeping enough. I average around 5-7hrs of sleep on weekdays.

Sometimes, I'll spend my whole Saturday reading notes, memorizing slides, and podcasting.

Are any of you guys able to just study a few hours a day and still get a decent grade? I feel like I'm investing too much time and need to study smarter

I admire you, because I did not study at all for my O-Chem class, like at all. Is all the time you spend studying truly spent studying?

Gotta super concentrate. No cell phone, no laptop and no music. Also, your brain has a daily limit. Do not watch anything or play video game on your study day.

I meant to say that I sleep 5-7

Forgot to mention that I Usually study 2-4 hours on weekdays and average 5-7hrs of sleep. Weekends I sleep more. . I usually study at home but I listen to music so maybe that distracts me? I sometimes get side tracked at home so maybe I should study on campus?

By daily limit, do you mean that after a certain point your brain will not absorb info? I usually study with music and sometimes go online since I use my laptop often. I'm not too disciplined unfortunately

See you are wasting your brain resource going online and listening to music. There is no such thing as multitasking. You switch your concentration target rapidly

I see what you mean. The only thing is that I have a habit of listening to music while studying haha. Not sure if that's exactly distracting or not?

Try to avoid music when you are studying. It will be hard at first because you will fall asleep. If your brain is use to spending 1 sec on study materials and 1 sec on music (for example), you will have 1 sec of doing nothing if there is no music. This will make you fall asleep. So, get used to studying with minimal distraction. You can be distracted without you being noticed. Always constantly monitor your concentration level. If it is getting low, take a break.

avoid music, be in total silence.

No... Some people need music to study. Unless OP is searching for music 1/2 the time, I don't see how it distracts him. I have to study with the TV/music noise in the background.

Ok, the thing is that music is more of a habit then a necessity. I think I study better without it.. And I tend to never take breaks. Maybe that is a mistake I'm making. Lol

Have you tried flash cards? I live by flash cards. Maybe they will work for you as well.

You school should have a learning or education center. Go seek them out for help with learning styles.

Plan out what you'll be working on for a given day, week, next couple of weeks, etc.

Hey OP. I also go to UC Davis. I'm gonna be a junior and I also spend multiple hours on Saturday and all of Sunday studying for school. While it is a lot of studying, I think it is necessary. There is no way I would have good grades unless I studied for 3+ hours during the school week and 6+ hours on Saturday and Sunday. As long as you are happy with your grades and you aren't too stressed, you should be fine.

Well those people have ADHD. We are not meant to multitask. Focus solely on the subject and reward yiurself with music, tv, etc.
