What's the consensus on listing class dissection labs as animal experience? VMCA's says to include academic experience, but I think someone was advising against this in a thread.

Also, I did some research work with a post-doc on anolis lizards, mostly providing basic care. The majority of the time, he wasn't directly supervising me, should i put this under vet or animal experience?

okay...thanks everyone. dang apps.

I put my neuroanatomy lab as animal experience.

I put my internship in the pathology lab as veterinary experience even though I only saw the director of the lab twice in 2 full quarters. (he also wrote me a LOR even though I don't think he could have picked me out of a lineup- I worked closely with his assistant, and he respected her opinion).

darned apps. so glad I am done with those... du du dun... for now...

Presumably the postdoc works for a professor, though, right? You should probably list it as working in the prof's lab, even if you only ever interacted directly with the postdoc. Were you hired to assist with the research or were you hired just to do husbandry? If you list it as research (which VMCAS says to count as "veterinary") you'll certainly be asked about it in your interviews. If you're asked "tell me about this lizard research you did" and you have to reply "oh, well, I only really fed the lizards and cleaned their cages, I didn't actually do any data collection or analysis" then it might not look so good. But if you can speak confidently about the research project and your role in it, then go ahead and count it as research/veterinary.

Dunno about the dissections - I kind of assumed they meant experience handling and caring for *live* animals. 🙂 I did loads of dissections in general bio lab, but didn't list it because I figured everyone does loads of dissections in general bio lab. But if you did some kind of advanced lab, maybe an AnSci course where you did something big like dissect a cow or a horse (or parts of cows and horses), that could be worth mentioning.

hmm thanks...i had an understanding of the research goals, but wasn't around long enough to take on much more responsibility than feeding, watering, weighing lizards, and incubating eggs. so i'll probably put the lizard research under animal experience.

as for the class lab stuff, i'm thinking you might be right with the "live" animal thing. i did do some cool stuff with measuring the electric potential of frog nerve though...

anyway, appreciate the advice! must take a break from this site before i start obsessing! 😀
