Hey guys,

I need some serious advice deciding whether i should retake MCAT or not. I have 31 MCAT: 12 physical 11 biological and 8 verbal and L on writing. I need to decide now because I need to have enough study time before I take my May MCAT. my writing score is so bad and i seriously don't know how these people grade it because it definetly does not estimate accurately my ability to write. If it helps, my ECs are weak. My over all GPA is ~3.85 with science GPA of ~3.9 and I have gone to community college for 2 years.

Would you retake?

It depends on which schools you'd most want to attend. If your most favored institutions have a bottom 10th percentile VS of 9 (per the MSAR), then you should retake. If you're aiming for less selective schools, then not necessarily.

What kind of progress are you making in improving your ECs?

Whats your GPA at the CC and then again at the 4-yr?

Well at Community college my cumulative was 3.82. At university, my cumulative is 3.9 and that is because of B+ in tennis sadly lol. My science GPA is ~4.0 at univveristy with only one A-. So i am actually performing better technically at university. Also I am a senior now so i m only taking 3 courses this semester which I am hoping to get straight As on.

Also in response to post above, I am not looking to get into really selective schools. If i can get into any less selective average MD schools. I have failed to get into med schools this year and I think is because I applied late and of poor ECs. I am wondering if my MCAT has anything to do with it

IMO, don't retake anything that's a 30+. If that score isn't getting you in (and you are applying broadly), there is another hole in your application.

You say your ECs are weak. What exactly do you mean by that?

well I lack medical exposure and research. i m trying to work my ass of volunteering at a hospital and get a doctor to shadow since i have 3 months before i apply again. I m trying to find doctors to show but i don't know who to ask. So u don't think i need to retake?

To add to what's been said, if you can't bring your verbal average up to about a 10 on practice tests while maintaining your other scores, don't retake. An 8 is plenty at most schools.

Yeah, I wouldn't retake it. A 31 is a good score, and VR scores are notoriously difficult for being tough to bring up.
