I live in the Bay Area, CA and to apply to osteopathic schools a lot of them only consider applicants who have shadowed a DO before. I'm having a really hard time trying to find one and was wondering if anyone in the Bay Area know of a doctor who's willing to have someone shadow them.

I tried calling 15 or so doctors already on the AOA website but has either been rejected or ignored and it's been very disappointing.

Thanks for all the help! I really appreciate it 🙂

I'm not from Cali..but let me tell you this...the DO I shadowed is my primary care physician....so, lets say maybe you need a yearly physical..who doesn't? then just pop in..be charming..they ask about personal history..so you can just throw in that you want to apply to DO schools...I had 3 or 4 visits with my doc before I asked..luckily I had a weird disorder that took some time to diagnose so I got to spend lots of time with her haha 🙂..best of luck...don't be too obvious about it though..wouldn't be very classy..but if YOU want to be a DO, your PCP might as well be a DO..

Stop calling and send formal letters in the mail. Its harder to ignore and if its good then the doc will feel almost obligated to at least respond.

1> switch your PCP to a DO.
2> complain to doctors about seasonal allergies
3> mention you want to be a do
4> ask to shadow dr
5> STARE AT DOCTOR IN A CREEPY FASHION until s/he submits
6> eat donuts
7> post on SDN thanking me
8> shadow dr
9> apply to med school
10> get interview invites!!!1111
11> go to interview
12> talk about how your primary care dr is a DO and you love it
13> eat more donuts
14> write silly yet helpful posts on sdn
15> 15 lolololo

edit:

On a more serious note, if your PCP is actually a DO it's a good place to start. I had been seeing mine for the past six years (unwittingly, it was a practice of two DOs) and he was very helpful after I dropped off a letter/pestered his office.

Awww..I almost forgot to mention that I was eating donuts and staring creepily at my doctor before she decided to let me shadow...a key point in the agreement...I am sure of it

Volunteer with an organization, like a clinic, that has D.O.s. After you start volunteering ask if you can shadow. That is what I did.

To the poster: Please PM me with your contact information and I will find a way to connect you with Touro CA medical students & possibly an alum to shadow.

Try contacting doctors that have their own clinic. That was a lot better for me than to contact hospital. I believe, hospitals have more restrictions and regulations for student shadowing as compared to clinics. Plus, they are a lot nicer and willing to allow you to shadow them! Good luck!!!👍

I have the same problem about shadowing a DO physician! I live in OH and I went to AOA.org to try and find DOs in my area. I found some and I made phone calls to the offices where they see patient and so far 8 of them are booked with shadowers 🙁 and the office staff usually just cut me off. I am getting discouraged because I really need to shadow a DO and it seems sooooo difficult to find one! Please, can anyone suggest me on how to find one?? Should I ask my Family Physician if he knows of any???

Which part of Ohio do you live in? You can PM me if you'd like. If you live in the same city where I live, I can help you since I shadowed a few.

You guys are making this much harder than it has to be. There's a couple websites out there that let you search for DOs in your area. Just look them up and send out 10-20 emails (expressing your genuine interest in shadowing them and why) and just wait for the responses. You'll have a couple who will agree and you'll get to choose between them. I'm sure you can find the sites with a quick search on here, that's what I did. Especially since you're from a major urban area they shouldn't be hard to find.
