Hey all!
I'm going to go ahead and apply to AUC, SGU, Ross, and Saba. As well as MUA-Nevis, St. Matthews, and AUA as back ups. My plan is to have everything in by mid-January... is this ample time? What are my chances of being accepted to one of the top 4 or 3 of the back ups? (See my stats below) I will be graduating with a BSc in Biological Sciences (Pharmaceutical Biotechnology) with a minor in Chemistry.
I have good EC's with my university such as being on the executive team for 2 major on campus clubs dealing with humanitarianism, education, and poverty. Also, I'll be able to get good LOR's from professors.
However, I don't have ANY clinical volunteer work under my belt. Trust me... I've tried going into doctor's offices and asking hospitals in my area. They are either booked solid, say they will get back to me but never do, or (I hate to say it) they tend to give the positions to people of the same race (i.e. Chinese) since that is what most of the doctor's in my area are. Also, being in the Toronto area there are so many applicants to Canadian medical schools that everyone wants to volunteer. 🙁
What should I do about this? Is it a big deal if I don't have any clinical experience but have other good EC's? Should I focus on my EC's in the personal essay?
I should also mention that I am currently retaking Biochemistry (got a D the first time) and I'm expecting nothing less than an A. I'll be done the course by late January. Also, I will be retaking Organic Chem II (D first time also) this upcoming semester and will strive for a good mark.
