Coagulase production by staph aureus is important in pathogenicity becuase
a) help to establish the typical abscess lesion.
b) helps to establish the typical cellulitis lesion
c) allows the organism to adher tightly to tissue
d) provide a polysaccharride capsule to inhibit phagocytosis
e) non specifically binds to the FC portion of Igg molecule.

I think the answer is (e) because the choice
d) is define the Capsule which provide a polysaccharide capsule to inhibit phagocytosis for the infection. I would not chose for the answer for this question.

One of the virulence factors of staph aureus is a coagulase(clumping factor). If the plasma is mixed with Staph then those organisms are clumping together which identical to coagulase. The importance of this is the process of induction of the cross-link of the fibrogen chains. So, the proper answer should be (e).

Hi,
I too think the ans is (d)
According to wikipedia

"Coagulase reacts with prothrombin in the blood. The resulting complex is called staphylothrombin, which causes blood to clot by converting fibrinogen to fibrin. Coagulase is tightly bound to the surface of the bacteria S. aureus and can coat its surface with fibrin upon contact with blood. It has been proposed that fibrin-coated staphylococci resist phagocytosis making the bacteria more virulent"

Answer (e) describes the function of Protein A.

Protein A of Staphylococcus is antiphagocytic, elicits hypersensitivity and causes platelet injury. Protein A binds IgG by the Fc portion. IgG can't react with the Fc receptor on phagocytes.

I am confused... 🙁 I think is (e)

Yeah.....dmn,you are right.(about Protein A)
But in the question isn't it asking about coagulase? If so,shouldn't the answer be (d) ?🙁

yeah!! you are right!!! thanks a lot!!!!!!!!

Hi.....answer is (A).please check the function of coagulase in USMLE book.IT is clearly given in that the coagulase production by staph aureus is important in abcess formation lesion.
