i am currently trying to plan out a trip which includes an interview at albany and then another at nymc the following day. i am not so clear on the layout of new york state. i will be flying from the west coast and flights into ALB and out of HPN are pretty expensive. would i have alot of driving to do if i flew in and out of the major NYC airports (JFK/LGA)? thanks alot for your help 😕

well, albany is about a 4-5 hour drive north of NYC. NYMC is about 40 minutes from NYC. so yeah, it is a lot of driving but doable. you can fly into JFK, drive the ~4 hours to Albany then drive south to NYMC, you could do it by train or bus but that would be more money. could you fly into albany then fly out of JFK or La Guardia?

A 3-way flight into ALB and out of NYC would make the car rental cheaper too. Renting a car in NYC, especially at the airports, can be 3-5x as expensive as the rest of the state. Gotta love supply and demand economics.

And if you're searching online for flights, type "NYC" as the airport code. It automatically searches for all 3 NY area airports (JFK, LGA, Newark), which are all about the same distance to NYMC, and allows you to compare prices.

Good luck.

hey guys thanks for your help, what u wrote has helped me alot. as of now it looks like the best way would be to buy a one way ticket to ALB and then another one way out of JFK. I am finding each for around $150. car rentals are expensive though, like $45/day!

that's probably about a 3 hour drive and depending on your schedule it's conceivably a 24-48 hour time span, hence no more than two days rental

i'm actually doing the opposite - nymc and then albany. i also don't plan on driving unless i have to - are there any good bus/train companies you suggest? i heard greyhound was really bad and $$. thanks!

I'd suggest flying into Newark if possible. It's actually a bit closer to Albany, and you'll avoid NYC traffic. Just get on I95 (NJ Turnpike) heading north, and take it to 87 North (NY State Thruway), which is a straight shot up to the Albany area. You'll have to consult a map, because I think there's a bit of a trick to connecting the two roads, if I remember correctly, but on the whole it's by far the quickest and most direct path.

Good luck w/ your interviews.

key kiwie07, if u dont mind me asking, which airport(s) are you flying in and out of? able to find any special deals? also, what are your lodging plans for nymc and albany? i dont know anything about greyhound or area trains either, so I am just gonna bite the bullet and rent a car...

hey - i'm coming in from boston, so in attempts to save money, there's this thing called the "chinatown bus" it's like 15 bucks and it picks you up from southsation in boston drops you off in the chinatown in ny on canal street then i'm taking some bus to nymc? i'm planning to get a student host from nymc the night before..and then i need to find a place to stay the night after because albany doesn't house you the night before. so in terms of housing plans i have no idea. to be honest, i just dont feel comfortable driving b/c i haven't really drove in like 4+ years. =P haha. when are you interviewing?

a couple things, albany airport has southwest flying into it... check that out, also it's DEFINETLY only 2-3 hours from new york to albany... it's 4-5 to my parent's house from new york city and they live 2 1/2 hours north of albany... best of luck to you

there's a "China bus" that goes many places..i know it goes between NYC and Boston for $10. See if it goes to Albany.

You could also take Amtrak down to Penn Station from the Rensselaer train station (about 10 minutes from Albany Med) or vice versa. Not sure how much it costs, but probably cheaper than renting a car and less stressful. Good luck!
