Hello all. I need help getting onto the right track. I want to hopefully eventually get into med school to be an obstetrician. First I need a bachelors degree and I have no college background yet. I researched that I need Bachelors of Science in Health. (Please correct me if I am wrong.) I am a Marine wife, always moving. I wanted to earn that degree online. However, I researched either med school doesn't accept online degrees because you need lab experience or they do.What is your opinion on that? If med school absolutely declines online degree's, can I do online school and do the labs at school? I am assuming fafsa online pays for one school at a time, so it would be a school that offers online and on campus?

Purchase the MSAR off of the AAMC website, it usually breaks down whether a school accepts online courses for each requirement or not. Most schools will break down the requirements as, e.g., General Chemistry, General Chemistry Lab, Organic Chemistry, Organic Chemistry lab... etc. So I would say yes you need lab. Either way, an A in an inclass, lab containing OChem class will look MUCH better to a committe than an online OChem class with no lab. Lab is usually the hard frustrating part of the chemistrys in their opinion. If you can find a school with the online section but in class lab, and its ok with the schools you are looking to get into, then go for it.

Also, you can have whatever bachelors degree you want, as long as you have fulfilled the schools requirement classes as well. (Chem, OChem, Biology, etc.. again, can be found in the MSAR or schools website.)

Hi Sushi,

For matriculation to med school you are going to need to complete a 4 year degree at an accredited school. Labs are obviously going to have to be in person and usually you take the respective class along with the lab. You should really take your pre-reqs at a brick and mortar university. This is going to be tough if you are regularly moving around but with persistence and transfer of credits you could probably do it. Any 4 year periods of stability on the horizon?? Check out my post on med school admissions requirements

In 3 weeks we are getting stationed in California, 29 palms. Which is in the middle of the desert. There are only two school's there, and only one has bachelors in biology. The other school has nothing similar as to the previous person that posted in this forum. The school is called, National University. I called them yesterday and they said I can do my classes online however Monday, Wednesday, Saturday 5-10 pm I come to the school to do labs. I really like this plan. Does this seem ok? We should be there at least for a year. If it doesn't go through, the closest school would be two hours away in Los Angeles. Is there any certain questions I need to ask this school?

Ask National University how many successful/unsuccessful pre-meds they graduated last year. I have not yet seen one. Perhaps they do exist, however. Be sure to specify: MD (or DO), not Naturopaths...

Let us know what they say!

You can major in anything you want. I have clinical colleagues who were English and Drama majors. Most pre-meds major in Biology or similar because it provides them with the experience of med school-like subjects, like, say, Micro, Biochem or Anatomy. You obviously must know the required classes. We've accepted people with the bare min of the pre-reqs.

Many thanks to your husband and you for serving your country. My own school will accept online classes as long as they're offered by an accredited university. So check into whether National is fully accredited. If not, do NOT have anything to do with them!

Are there any community colleges near 29 Palms? If so, you can do the lab work there.

Semper Fi!

No Goro, she really nailed it on the head with it being in the desert. There is nada out there :-/.

I feel for you sushi. I had to go out there for one month every year and that was hard enough my mental stability haha. You could get by with online classes from somewhere though I would think!
