Hey all! This has been bothering me very much and I need some guidance from somebody who is experienced with this kind of stuff. I am having tr pouble choosing between two career paths which are Computer Programming and Becoming a Doctor. I am currently a highschool student and I am dual enrolling hoping to get my first year of college done before I even get there. I have a love for computers and I enjoy using computers very much. I even started learning how to program in my spare time. But at the same time I like science a lot and i also really want to be a doctor. I know that the doctor is obviously the right choice, but i still need some guidance. If anybody could just give me a brief overview of what i would be doing in school on the path to becoming a doctor it would be much appreciated. Thank you 🙂.

For the list of classes you need to take, look up any medical school and look at the requirements. They're mostly the same and will include physics, chemistry, organic chemistry, and biology. You should have some interest in these topics or else premed life is going to be pretty miserable for you.

As for career choice, that's not something anybody but you can decide. HOWEVER, you can search through these forums and read up on various threads and perhaps pick up some idea of what the profession may entail. You should also shadow and speak to an actual physician to get an inside perspective and make sure it is something you want to do.

Besides that, there are a ton of other things you need to do (an entire laundry list) which I won't go into which people call EC's (extracurriculars). You can search the forums and find out about these yourself. It's more than just grades and MCAT.

A note about your indecisiveness: you should take a major that you enjoy in college. If you like comp sci, do comp sci. If you like science, do science. You can do a comp sci major and still take the classes required for medical school. People do that all the time. Some doctors even go into a career where they use things they learned in computer science to further their research or work in R&D for medical device companies, etc. The options are endless.

To reiterate what BKN89 said, enroll in a major you enjoy. If you get in and find you do not enjoy computer science as much, you can always change to a different major. Plenty of freshman do this every year and lots enter undecided. In the case you do not get into medical school, you will need something to fall back on that you enjoy.

You can get into medical school with any major as long as you have the pre-reqs, and colleges have resources to help students to find out what they need to take and do to get into medical school. Do something you will enjoy and you can get in if you work hard enough.

Just focus on starting your college career in something you enjoy for now. After the first few weeks, go talk to your pre-med advisor, and they will help you decide what to take to help you get into medical school. One step at a time.
