Help! Am I a DO categorical medicine intern at a great university-based allopathic program. My husband is a DO with great stats (Ivy league undergrad, 240+ on USMLE Step 1 and 2, 99% for COMLEX Step 1 and 2, honors in all third year rotations, nice letters, but not any from any big name people, went to DO school just to be with his less competitive wife) who did not match into radiology last year and did a medicine prelim and applied again this year only to find he didn't match again.

We thought we would have an in at the program where he is doing his prelim because he spent two elective months there and would do extra work and research for the department even on his ward months.

We are both obviously devestated and to make matters worse he has to scramble now while we are both on night float this month. Since we are out of residency and far from our med school, we don't even have a home base to do the scramble. We don't even have a fax machine! I need some help.

I am confused - your post says you are both out of residency but you describe being in residency and your husband is doing a Prelim IM year. Most applicants utilize ERAS for the Scramble. Please read the instructions there.

Finally, if you need a FAX machine, your husband should be asking his PD for some help and if he can use the department FAX machine. Kinkos have FAX machines which can be used in a pinch, or hell, you can buy one for under a $100 and use your home phone line. Otherwise, I would have all of his documentation scanned and saved as a PDF file ready to send to programs. Why is his residency program not helping him?

If anything, being on NF should make it easier since he would have all day off to get a position as opposed to those students who are still trying to work during the day on clinical rotations.

Something doesn't add up - if your husband has such a great application, why has he not matched for two years in a row? Is he limiting himself geographically because of you? Is there a red flag in his file that you haven't revealed? Is he limiting himself to a competitive specialty? After two years, he needs to broaden his applications and acceptable fields if he cannot match into Rads.
