Hey everyone,

Yes its one of those threads again…sigh. I just took NBME 12 and scored a 200 on it. I’m signed up to take it this Thursday, but don’t feel ready. My dean was kind enough to allow me to push my first rotation to the end of 3rd year to allow me more time to study. I want to do Ortho/Gen Surg. This rotation is 4-5 weeks long and I want your guys advice on how I should spend this time to maximize my score. I really feel like my foundation is weak in some areas. As for UWORLD, I try my best to understand the case/presentation, but reviewing the questions takes forever! I feel as if I remember how the question was asked and some background info from the explanation, but if a brand new question very similar to one on UWORLD were presented to me im at a loss at how to think beyond the scope of UWORLD. Pathoma is helpful, but not enough imo for critical thinking/manipulation. I’m open to any advice and suggestions(even if its harsh) that you all might have
THANKS IN ADVANCE

So far:
Uworld-80% completed
1 pass thru FA
Did all of pathoma except first 3or 4 chapters.

Next 4-5 weeks?
Kaplan QBank vs Finishing/2nd pass thru Uworld
Goljan vs Pathoma?

If you have not started Goljan, do not try and read the book. You should 10000000% look at the first 3 chapters of Pathoma. He did the first 3-4 chapters really well. And yea... reading the explanations for UWORLD but it has to be done. It takes me a good 3 hrs to go through 46 questions.

So If I were in your position, I would finish pathoma, finish UWORLD, read FA, and maybe BRS physio.

Not reading the reasoning behind Uworld Qs kinda defeats the purpose. Yea it takes a while but that's how you learn. You can't just skip to scoring 260 without putting in the time and effort

I read the explanations, but I dont get much from them. I feel like if I see all questions related to a topic(i.e. Graves or cardiomyopathies) that I would be able to retain more versus one question on a particular topic today and another one from a different angle a couple days in the future. So far I've done random blocks timed 46. Would anyone suggest doing UWorld again but thru subject/organ wise?

Just out of curiosity, what were your UWorld scores like? And yes I'd do subject exams for weakest areas. May want to get yourself some fresh questions to see if you're really learning too.

Annotate uworld questions into FA. Do the same with usmlerx. Get a supplementary resource for pharm and path. Put tons of hours in.

Score high.

If thats what you need definitely should not be doing it on random. Plus that only makes it more difficult to go through FA if you're jumping all over.

my uworld cumulative is 54%.

theubiquinator: Have you done kaplan questions? I hear that those questions are harder than world. What do you think kaplan questions add that uworld lacks?

I think you're better off going through uworld again. Kaplan is supposed to be more nit picky with the details, and less similar to real questions like uworld. You don't want to use too many resources, don't spread too thin.

I did Kaplan questions. They are harder in the sense that you need more specific recall of facts listed in FA. Not as much critical thinking

Yea I've done both. Not harder per se, just focused on more discrete info with less thought process involved in answering (and probably writing) them. I sort of use them like flashcards. If I was going to start a new set of questions I'd do USMLERx. Quality seems to be UW > USMLERx > Kaplan
