Need help picking schools!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
i'm assuming u're a junior in college? since u're lacking in research, volunteering and other EC's

your stats are top 20 medical school material, however, your EC's are lacking...

if u're a junior, apply broadly and early, and work on doing something outside the classroom because ur stats are excellent!

I'm planning on submitting my app June 1st and getting all secondaries in ASAP. And I'm going to continue working/research/volunteering throughout the summer. Do you think taking on another volunteer position, maybe something like mentoring kids, would help? Something sports related seems like it'd be a lot of fun.

you are probably prime for mt. sinai, but ur chances at mayo is kinda slim since mayo usually prefer nontrads with a long of crazy EC's and life experience.

you're EC's arent bad..its just that u started it kinda late...like a couple of months ago and that shows lack of long-term committment in the eyes of the ADCOMS

Ok cool. Yea that's what I figured about the ECs

Ok cool. Yea that's what I figured about the ECs. My freshman year I didn't know what I wanted to do and I was just too lazy to go do something just to do it. Sophomore year I decided I wanted to goto med school and then that summer I went to EMT training so I didn't really start any other ECs until the beginning of junior year.

Oh yea.. am I going to need to get a transcript from the community college I took EMT courses at or can I just ignore it on the AMCAS? I guess it'd boost my cGPA a little.

if you got credit at a junior college for your EMT, you have to submit your transcript like it or not (which sounds like it will help in your case)

interviewed at sinai, got in off the waitlist to their mstp (loved the school but had to decline... anyway)

mount sinai cares a lot about research and community service activities and also a decent mcat score (mine was 35 but much lower gpa). most admissions work in committees. so even if you have a great interview you may be reduced to the primary app. therefore it is important that you get your ECs in order before you submit it. Your activities are deemed how you present it. If you write that you just genotyped rats and come off bored, readers will think that way. I would suggest that you show some excitement, and describe the good aspects/theories or research (in first person to have an emphasis on responsibility). The volunteer activities that Sinai seemed to like were out of the hospital types. They do a lot of in home patient care for the people of Spanish Harlem (good people).

amazing school and lovely people. sick location. I hope you end up there!

Honestly, I think your ECs would be great if they were more spread out/you started earlier. As they are, I think they're fine. Apply broadly and I think you'll have some success.

Thanks for the input!

One more question - Would it look bad to pick up some kind of mentor volunteering responsibility for the summer? I've been interested in doing it for a while now but haven't had the time, I'm just worried that starting now will look like a desperate attempt to add an ECs right before applying.

No, because I think you definitely need all the help you can get EC-wise. Better late than never.
