  1. Pre-Medical
I have done my Alevels in 2009 and was planning to join medical school in my own country(Bangladesh). But then my dad who lives in Belgium had applied for me and this month i am moving to Belgium.Recently I have found out that there is no medical school in Belgium (or any other western European countries) which teaches in English except UK.Now I am in great problem as I cant speak French or Dutch🙁 which are the main languages in Belgium but I do have some knowledge of German as I have done A2 course in German language in Goethe Institute. Now i really need some good suggestions.Should I continue learning German for some months and go for German medical schools? Will it be too much difficult for me to study in german language ?How much time would it take to learn German fluently? Will I be able to learn it by 8 or 9 months and then can I apply directly to German medical schools? Or I have to study again at Studienkolleg? I have done my Alevels in Biology,Chemistry,Physics and got good grades.Already I have taken a gap year so I want to get admission to medical school as soon as possible. So please guys help me to decide what should I do now?😕

Hey,

Well, German schools require you to have a very high level of German, documented by the TestDaF exam. And yes, it is quite competitive to get into a medical school in Germany. It's not such an easy language either (due to the complex grammar, syntax and vocabulary.) Nevertheless, if you're determined, then it's definitely possible.

The other option is to look into the Central European medical schools (in Poland, Czech Republic, and Hungary) or UK medicals (which are ridiculously expensive.) There is one other option - Italy. There is one university (Vita-Salute San Rafaelle, Milan, Italy) that offers a 6 year English MD program taught entirely in English. You will be learning Italian in the first 1 or 2 years but you do it simultaneously while studying medical subjects. It is however quite competitive - only 20 non-EU citizen students are chosen every year.

Good luck!

Thanks a lot Shreypete for your reply.
But the problem is I dont wanna go for Central European medical schools and I cant go for UK medical school as they are very expensive so i cant afford them and Italian medical school would be too much competitive.🙁

I have chosen Germany as I already have some knowledge in German language though I know its not very easy but I am ready to learn it.But I want to know how much time it would take to learn German fluently? Can I be fluent in German in 8 or 9 months ?Will it be very difficult for me to study medicine in German ?If I pass the Language test can i get admission in medical school directly or I have to study again at Studienkolleg ?How much time it may take altogether ?Already I have taken a gap year so I want to get admission to medical school as soon as possible.

Do you know any other foreign student who did the same and became successful ?

As shreypete stated, you need to be fluent in German to be able to attend med school in Germany. It definitely is possible to become fluent in 8 to 9 months, but it will require full time training, including watching German television and reading German newspapers. There are quite a few foreign med students in Germany (I would assume 5% of all students), many from the middle east and africa, none of them spoke German before they decided to attend a German university.

Regarding the exact requirements I can't help you, I don't know which courses and tests to take. But you could just contact German universities and ask them, they all have dedicated sections on their homepages for foreign applicants in English.

You might want to come to Europe early, stay with your father and learn German in Belgium, so you could adjust to European lifestyle and take some trips to Germany and visit some of the university towns.

i agree with the above post. my friend who didn't get accepted to any US med school or carribean med school decided to attend medical school in poland. although he didn't know the language, he managed to keep up with the class by acquainting himself in the country 6 months before school started. he became familiar with the dialect by interacting with the students at the school before class officially began. he is right now in his 2nd year and doing well 🙂

If you know German, learning Dutch would be really easy for you. Universities in Belgium have a 1-year course designed for students who want to enter academic education in this country. Though please be ADVISED there is an admission test to Belgian medical schools. No matter where you come from and who you are, you cannot study medicine without passing that test (Math, Physics, Chemistry, Biology + Psychological Testing). And that test is all but easy. Actually foreign students barely ever succeed in it. I would look into the option Germany!

Hello!
I'm responding to this because I'm n the same boat (more or less), in my case, I want to get into a Swiss Medical School but I have to learn German before that. It is very possible to learn German in a short amount of time, but as everyone stated before, it is all up to you and the effort that you put into it. I would personally suggest moving to Germany for a while, so you get use to the language and the culture. Beware, German schools a highly competitive, and you will need a C1 level to even pass the language exam (and even higher knowledge to make it through the med school). Will it be dificult for you to study in German? Well, it all depends on the level that you have when you start, the higher the better. And, I'm not just saying conversational German, you must know your science in German as well. I know people who only had to do the language exam and got in immediately , but they also had Bachelors or Master degrees to back them up.
