Hi everyone!!! I am curious to how you'll have been able to find doctors to shadow? I am interested in shadowing a DO neurosurgeon, but I have not been successful. I have tried using online search engines with no luck either. Is there a website that list doctors by state or something?
Thanks for your help:🙂))

I contacted my state's osteopathic association. They gave my the # for the president of my county's chapter. Before that I sent out 10-15 faxes inquiring regarding shadowing....no one called back. I did eventually shadow one DO but unfortunately..just for one day. So, since i live near UMDNJ I'm gonna contact them next to find another doctor.

You can find someone, just keep looking...

:luck:Goodluck:luck:

I would recommend finding an online physician directory for a local hospital. I looked through a directory, went down the list, and emailed at least 10 DOs I had never met. I felt weird emailing random people at first, and most of the doctors never responded, but I was able to shadow two great physicians.

DO neurosurgeon? What's the point? Does he do cranial before every surgery?

Hey .. I went on the AOA mentor sight.. it's posted somewhere on the boards.. and just got back from my first day of shadowing.. I'd just like to say it was GREAT!! I learned alot and the doc was very friendly towards students shadowing (there was two of us at the office today).. I'd definitely try doing the mentor program.. I picked a bunch of DOs within my range of travel distance.. and about 3-4 days later this doctor was assigned to me by the program and the rest if history as they say .. Hope that helps..

Thanks everyone for your help!!! I might have to do some traveling because I have not been able to find many DOs in my area let along in the specialty of my interest. I go to a school with a medical school (UNC SOM) and I am also close to a few others (Duke and Wake), however that has not been helpful either. Oh, topworm seriously what's your point?

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but I found the link a previous post referred to, and I thought others may find it helpful as well :

This is a hit-or-miss method. I called ~ 25 DOs and none of them would let me shadow. All of them stated "we just don't do that anymore." Seriously, how are they supposed to get future physicians interested in Osteopathy 🙄?

I would contact the AOA mentor program if you're not having luck.

i contact my volunteer coordinator

use your connection

Is there a preference on what type of DO you shadow? In other words, is a primary care physician preferred over a dermatologist?
