I remember how difficult writing this is. I really wish I had started here. If this doesn't help you, I don't know what will. Note: it is for med school, but I can assure you that everything there applies to us as well.

Sadly I read someone's personal statement and it really broke down into that.

Sometimes I think the adcoms would like something a little different. Throw a picture of a naked lady in there or something to spice it up and they'll accept you only because they will always remember it.

I must say - that had me in tears. It is so true. I mean it's hard to be unique in an essay where everyone is trying to get across the same message. But I agree with you, try to be original and mix it up. My only complaint is that the form letter did not include the phrase "help people" half a dozen times. That would have put it over the top in my book.
