First off I apologize that this might not be in the right section - I'm on my phone and can't figure out where to post this. I am currently doing research with a professor at my school that is very chemistry based and uses a lot of hplc and gc. Originally i planned to go home to Texas and do research with a professor there as well as take an mcat prep course (which I could also do around school). The research in Texas is in a Biochem lab and working more with proteins which seems like it would be more valued research to medical schools. However, now the professor at my school offered for me to stay and work in his lab this summer and get paid. The thing is I really enjoy working with the professor at my school and would like to continue in my senior year (next year) and don't want to let him down. But... I also really want to go home and be with my family and my dogs and horse 🙁. I guess my question is:
How beneficial/detrimental would switching between two different types of research be?
Would working in a Biochem lab for the summer benefit my application at all? As apposed to sticking with one research project?
Thanks!!

Just to clarify... I would continue working with the prof at my school next year either way (most likely), but am wondering how important continuity is..

Thanks for the responses. I have to admit I was hoping you guys wouldn't say that. But I agree continuity is probably important

I say, if you already have a preference, go where you'll be happier. If you really want to go back home for the summer and be productive there, there's absolutely no problem with it. Both are great options. If you're truly stuck and cant make up your mind, then I'd go and consider what the other posters said. But, remember this is one of your few remaining summers before medical school. At the end of the day, you will do best when you're doing what you want. Sounds like you prefer to be in TX for the summer - go for it! This is only one summer, so it's not like the PI won't understand.
