My fellow classmates and I feel that we were not adequately prepared in our ther ex class for clinicals. We went over the different kinds of exercises and progressions, but never really got into specifics, especially when it comes to specific populations. We more so learned, "Cardiovasuclar exercises should be at least 30 mins. most days of the week" type of things. Apparently, this is an area that students from my program struggle in every year. If we want to take a proactive approach and do some research and educating on our own, can anyone provide any suggestions or good references for doing so?

As a side note, we used Kisner and Colby's ther ex book which I found to be helpful, but again, I do not feel confident in my ability to prescribe an exercise program. Any and all suggestions/experiences are welcome!

My school used Kisner and Colby as well, which is a great reference. Really, I didn't feel too
prepared to prescribe ther ex either, but you learn from your clinical instructor and from your clinicals you gain experience and creativity. If you're approaching your first clinical, I think you'll be fine. But I'd be interested to know if anyone else has references as well.

The book we used was ACSM Guidelines for Exercise Testing and Prescription. Although, honestly, most of the time our reading assignments came from articles. I felt adequately prepared from our ther ex class based purely on the fact that our labs were taught by clinicians. They knew how to target our lesson plan to be clinically relevant.

I wouldn't worry though, you will learn from your CI once you get out on internship. They are there for you to ask questions 🙂 I can understand your frustration though.
