Hello, I found this great website today and I hope someone can help me about my concern.
English is my second language so please excuse me for bad grammar and spelling issues.
I am 31 years old immigrant with working visa in Texas state. (No green card or citizenship). My current
job is sponsoring me for a green card at the moment and hopefully I will get it early next year. I have
always wanted to become a dentist but I didn't do well in my undergrad years. I was an international
student in my college years. I did well in my freshman year, made 3.8 overall GPA but I started to hang
out with wrong people and I stopped studying. I just made all C's to just stay in school. When I became
a Junior I departed from the group and tried to bring back my low grades to get into dental school but I
was told by the dental schools in texas that they don't take international students. After the depressing
news I pretty much gave up on school. (Graduated with Overall GPA 3.0 and Science GPA was a little
below 3.0 i believe... don't
remember since it's been 7 years since I graduated from college). But inside of me I still have this desire
to become a dentist and hopefully getting a green card next year can somewhat help me to achieve my
dream. So I would like to ask everyone here what are my options or chances to become a dentist at the
moment. I have done some researches online and many people recommended to go to 1 year grad. school
and make 4.0 GPA. or retake some undergrad courses to bring up the GPA. Which option is better? And I
know I would need to get some shadowing hours but what is the minimum required shadowing hours?
Are there anything else that you recommend other than those things I have mentioned above?
Any information is helpful at this point. I am a little scared at this point because I am 31 years old and I
will be struggling financially to pay for school and exams. If you think it is better to stick with my current
job then please be honest about it and tell me. Any doctors/ dental students or even pre-dental students
are welcome to leave comments for me.
I truly appreciate everyone who spent your time to read my post. Thank you.
