I've been planning on taking the DAT and am planning to take it in October. After reading some threads it seams as if taking it in Oct. is too late?

1. When would be the best time to take the DAT?

2. When would be ideal to apply to the universities (also can you apply before taking the DAT)?

Am I out of luck for admissions in Sept 2008? Because most schools say deadlines are Dec 1 and Jan 1?

Please Help :S!!!

i would take it only when u are ready. If u take it before you are ready and mess up, not only are u not going to get into dental school but u will have bad scores that the dental schools will look at. Take your time, just not to much time!!

I concur..take it only when you're ready, n get ready quickly if you want to apply in this cycle.

Thanks for the response, I was hoping I could get more detail regarding the questions I had. Could anyone help. I would ever so be thankful.

Thanks,

Hey Romeo................

Okay Re: your Q's...

1. The best time to take the DAT is when you are ready. I know... that is probably not what you are looking to hear, but it is the truth. My advise is take the DAT some time the year BEFORE you want to apply to dental school. For example... I would be prepping for the DAT between now and Jan/Feb, to take the DAT in Feb, to be ready to go for the 2009-entry class application cycle (which opens May 15th, 2008).

2. In applying to dental school... APPLY EARLY! Again the application cycle opens May 15th, and dental schools begin taking applications June 1st. But do not delay!

You can apply first, and then take the DAT, there is no problem with that at all. Each, applying and taking the DAT, are incredibly stressful... and so plan this as well as possible.

Also... you may want to plan a little "padding" time into the date of when you plan to take the DAT... in the event that you get to the week before the test and decide that you are not ready... you can delay the test.

Good luck!

Oh... about applying for this application cycle... What are your grades? How confident are you in going in and really scoring well on the DAT? If you have 3.8+ and score in the 23-29 range on the DAT... this cycle is probably not too late for some schools like NYU and Tufts... but at the end of the day it is your call (and $$$$$!)

I wouldn't rush everything at this point to make it for this app cycle. I would just plan on having everything lined up to submit mid-May.

I think others have given you pretty good answers to these questions already, but I think I will try to be a little more specific...

1. The majority of people take DAT during the summer. Usually around June-August since most schools dont start reviewing app. till late August or so.

2. As soon as possible, aka May 15th of each year if you want to matriculate the year after.

3. If you are average or below average (GPA 3.4 and below, DAT 18 and below) you are pretty darn late. Even if you submit your application to AADSAS at this very moment, your applications wont get to schools till late October the earliest, if you are extremely lucky. Of course, if your stats are stellar (3.7+, 21+) then you probably have a decent shot.
