Third year has not been going well for me. I haven't done well on any of the rotations. I am not a good test taker. I scored low on step 1, scored in the 60s for the shelf exam on the shelf exams I've taken. My grades were actually decent in the first year (maybe top 30% of the class), but I have lost motivation for one reason or another (I'm trying to work through some issues). In terms of the clinical aspect of the rotation, on the other hand, preceptors have told me I've done well and offered to write letters for me. I so far have an interest in internal medicine and maybe radiology. In terms of research I've only gotten an abstract out, but not a paper. Pretty much my application is lack luster except LORs. If anyone could offer some advice as to how I can best position myself, it would be appreciated. Is there any utility in taking a year off to do some research at a big name institution (while studying for step 2 to bump up my score)?
