Hi guys!

I'm doing a project surrounding student feedback on courses and clerkships and need to understand how other medical schools go through this process. I'm a UW-SMPH student, so information on any other MD program would be helpful. I will give an example of the kind of information and level of detail I'm looking for (it's pretty granular), but feel free to skip to the questions at the end. Post your reply to this thread or PM me. Make sure you include your school.

1. How is feedback collected and processed for pre-clinical courses?

"1-2 block representatives are chosen from elected student government members to give real time weekly feedback to block leaders via in-person meetings using information they gather from the class from informal surveys and word of mouth. On top of this students MAY fill out weekly surveys regarding each lecture, small group discussion, etc. This survey information is sent directly to the lecturers or those involved in making the content. There are no professionalism points associated with these surveys and this information is not used for the final course improvement plan.
At the end of each block, students are required to fill out a more formal survey including LIKERT scales and two areas for written comments. This data is aggregated and de-identified and then sent to a formal student curriculum committee including members of student government and other students elected to the position. This committee selects 4 members (usually 2 members who took the course this iteration and 2 students from different years) to go through the data and create a formal document summarizing what went well in the course and what needs to be changed, citing data from the formal student survey for support. Additionally, the faculty block leader also receives the data and begins to draft their own document called a "course improvement plan".
The student curriculum committee submits their document to the block leader and a higher education committee composed of faculty and students responsible for approving all curriculum changes. The block leader incorporates aspects of the student drafted document into their course improvement plan and explains why they are including or omitting certain requested changes from the student document. Then the block leader submits this final course improvement plan to the higher education committee for approval."

2. How is feedback collected and processed for clinical courses/clerkships?

"Process is almost identical to pre-clinical years, except for during clerkships there are no weekly surveys and block representatives only meet with the clerkship director at the end of each block instead of weekly. (Multiple clerkships are combined into required blocks for M2s and M3s in my curriculum). All processes surrounding the student curriculum committee and higher education committee are the same."

3. How do administration and faculty communicate their responses to course and clerkship feedback?

"A final course improvement plan is posted on a website for all students to view usually 2-3 months after the course or clerkship has ended. Sometimes a block leader will email this out to the student body. There are no mechanisms in place to hold these block leaders accountable for proposed changes."
