It's looking like my old one just bit the dust and I'll almost certainly have to get a new one.

Here is what I'm looking for in a new one:
-small
-lightweight
-starts up quickly
-doesn't overheat easily
-does not have to be fast or have tons of RAM (inability to run games is actually a plus 🙂 )
-must be able to run youtube & other streaming video applications
-able to connect to wireless networks
-at least 1 USB port
-hopefully < $500

Can anybody recommend something?

In that price range you're basically looking for a netbook, especially if you don't care about running games. Just be aware that you're basically limited to world, excel, and the internet, and these things are SLOW.

I beg to differ, I've been using my *very basic* netbook daily (and heavily) for almost two years now and it runs almost faster than my desktop computer. 😉

It's not made for things like video games or heavy graphics work, but for the rest, it's quite fine.

Sure, it's all relative. If your portable PC is only going to be used for light office work and internet browsing (which sounds like it's the case for the OP) a netbook will work fine.

The ones that run XP or the a Linux derivitive actually run fairly decently. I've been told by several people that the ASUS netbooks are rather hardy too

If one can wait Black Friday/Cyber Monday really is the best day to buy a computer.
