Hey guys,

I'm an M1 and we need to get microscopes for histo. Renting is over priced and I would rather buy one at a lower price, then rent it out to M1s for next 3 years and make money...

So, anyone know where to find good microscopes online??

Thanks

How good does it have to be? American Science & Surplus seems to have a few, and they tend to have pretty nice deals.

Even if you don't buy a scope from them, remember it for your children's science fairs...

Dam...who actually still uses a microscope in med school? All are histo slides were images. Probably better to buy a good histo atlas instead.

Here's a favorite site of mine.

Meh, I don't agree with you on that one. The OP obviously could have googled it, but I think (s)he is looking for a reputable site, or maybe even a name brand/model that is notorious for being reasonably priced and reputable.

What medical school do they make you bring your own microscopes? I think that's a ridiculous ripoff.

I bought a 400x microscope from Walmart when I was in 6th grade. Once I got a bloody nose and I quickly took that opportunity to collect the specimen and look under it in the microscope. I could clearly see the erythrocytes, and this was a POS 50 dollar microscope. I think microscope technology is evolved significantly from the days of Antonie van Leeuwenhoek that you should easily find a decent cheap one on Google.

Plus, its a practice for the real world. What happens when you work for a company and your company is leading the research on something? You can't expect to email every time in the company every time you have a question. Google, it makes you smart.

Admissions commitee: Well Mr Johnson, we would be glad to have you come and train at our medical school. Just one thing though, you would have to buy one of our microscopes.

Student: YES!!!! Everyone told me that I wouldn't be able to get into medical school!!! I showed them! So what other programs does this university have?

AdCom: A really good sales program.

Student: Sales?

AdCom: Yes, we sell microscopes to idiots.

So...go to Amazon? This really isn't rocket science, and if you're looking for a cheap microscope, you're not looking for a good one.

Yes.

agreed. Our school had microscopes for us. I never even touched them and just looked at a lot of histo images. Our tests were even on microscopes, and it still wasn't that hard.

I didnt really many medical schools still used microscopes. Most of our slides are scanned and are veiwed using computer software.

What's your idea of cheap?

The best microscope you can get for under $2,000.00 is probably the Nikon Eclipse 200. It comes standard with 4x, 10x, 40x, and 100x PLAN objectives and a 20mm field of view. It's fully upgradeable in the event that you want to use phase microscopy or digital image capturing in the future.

It's used by Veterinary Pathologists.

You can also buy a rigid carrying case designed specifically for the E200 which is nice for travel.

If you're looking for the best value under $1,000.00, I would recommend the Olympus CX 21.

If you need to keep it in the $500.00 range, you should consider either Labomed or Accuscope.

Good luck.

I second this. Ross is pretty good book for Histo and has great slides at the end of the chapter. If you want to suplement, the university of Iowa has a great histo selection online with explanations of what you are looking at. Skip the microscope if possible. It is low yield, I promise.

We still use microscopes and slides for histo (and path during M2) at EVMS - the school provides the scopes (high quality Nikon and Leitz scopes, at that). And to be honest, I'm really glad that we do, and that I have the experience of learning histo and path on an actual microscope.

Bummer that the OP has to provide his/her own.
