Hello,

I have taken two years off after graduating from college to work at a lab, do diff volunteer work at diff hospitals, and most
Importantly do things that I, as a premed for life, did not get a chance to do before.

i have gotten into two MD schools so far on Oct and am waiting for six more post interview results.

Though I am not sure which school I would eventually choose to go to, I am now sure that I will go to a med school next year 🙂

So i just want to now start prepping for med school materials since I have almost eight months of free time before starting school!

I know many people say that I should travel and have fun and enjoy my last free time before school starts, but thats something Ive already done enough of already after graduating. And im kind of getting sick of chilling, and want to get back on academic track.

The biggest reason why Im looking to do this is becuz Ive always been doing poorly on my first year in school. For middle + high schools +college, ive always done so badly my first year and then got myself together and brought my grades up evenrtually.

I dont want to repeat this history in med school and i would really like to sort of get a head start since it seems like Im a slow learner/starter when it comes to studying.

So I was wondering if any current med students could share their thoughts about what I should use to pre-study for the first two years
Of med school. Do all med schools use the same text book? If so, can I get the author iformation? If not, what is the best way I can go about doing this

Would appreciate your help!!

For your med school prep work, I would strongly suggest you read Game of Thrones, the entire Harry Potter series, and the Dragonriders of Pern (Yeah, I'm serious.)

Very few people use text books for medical school. Your curriculum will take you through it.

If you are desperate to study, just don't. Many people who are fine with the sciences report that epidemiology is tough, so figuring out a way to learn that might be a good idea.

You could read up on anatomy or physiology if you really want to, but you'll pretty much be wasting your time. Bumbling around for the 8 months before school starts won't help your study habits once med school begins. Why don't you focus on developing ways to improve your focus and not letting yourself get behind once school starts rather than deceiving yourself into thinking you can get any sort of meaningful head start now?

Look at nature. And the sky. Stars. You significant other (if you don't have one, find one to look at).
Or learn statistics, if you don't know it already. Or how to cook and fix your car/bicycle.
I'm not sure how many pre-study.
But don't "chill". Do something. Go to a different country. Teach yourself something new.

Anatomy sucks. If you do anything do that.

I would take this time to do some introspection and figure out WHY you tend to do poorly your first year of each academic stage. Getting that situation locked down will be far more helpful than pre-studying. Once you decide which school you will be attending, try to get in touch with some current students who can give you helpful tips specific to your school (like "don't go to blahblahblah's lectures read ___ instead"). Learn how to cook a variety of healthy but QUICK meals so your nutritional status doesn't deteriorate in med school. If you're really desperate to do something somewhat medical, learn medical Spanish - that's what I wish I had done before med school.

All solid suggestions. I'd throw in my personal favorite, The Curse of the Mistwraith series as well if you have the time.

The Two Gentlemen of Verona, by master William Shakespeare,
and,
Lays of Ancient Rome, by Thomas Macaulay.

Read this, then this. Figure that stuff out, then put it on the backburner and chill. You'll be fine.
