Hi,
I asked the dentist who I have been volunteering for 5 months to write me a LOR. And he told me to write it myself, then he will sign it. Can someone give me some ideas what to write. If you have a sample of LOR from Dentist, can I take a look at?

Thank you so much.

Seriously unethical.

Wow... you have been volunteering for 5 months and he wont even write you a LOR?

You should talk to him about that...

Just write something... dentists are people too and they don't have a special skillz in writing LOR. Just think of a person, and think of how you'd want to recommend him/her to a school. Anything will do.

I have crap for writing skillz, and if a student ever come to me to job shadow and ask for LOR... what would I do then? Right? It's what you're asking. Just write something ~ they don't really care anyway. It's all about your DAT, GPA, and interview. These letters are just hoops for you to jump through.

Write about what you did there; how you helped out. Did you help suction, sterilize, x-rays? Talk to people? How did you volunteer there and how does it demonstrate it's something you should be doing as a career?

The letter should be addressed to "Admissions Commitee" and could contain comments on the following areas of evaluation:

1. How long have you known the candidate? In what capacity?
2. How do you compare this individual with his/her peers?
3. Career motivation and professional promise.
4. Academic performance and potential.
5. Personal attributes.
6. Greatest assets as a candidate.
7. Weak areas as a candidate.
8. Leadership.
9. Service.
10. Any other useful information.

Typically, a dentist you have shadowed should be able to comment on your potential as a dental student/dentist, your ability to communicate, your enthusiasm to learn and understand, your motivation (obtained from your personal statement), your professional demeanor and how you would compare to other applicants that he has encountered. I hope that helps!
