I'll try to make this as short as possible while disclosing any information that might influence a decision. Thanks in advanced if you read this:

cgpa: 3.3 sgpa: 3.1
I'll be taking a gap year after graduating this semester and would appreciate any opinions to help me decide between two options. I am NY resident (hispanic; 3 yrs patient-physician translator at a free clinic) and am graduating from a university in Long Island and am looking to apply md/do this upcoming cycle both in and out of state. Here is my predicament:

A very close friend from uni is from a large midwestern city and I've gone to visit them several times in their home state. Their family is close friends with many doctors and as a result I've shadowed several of them during my visits and one doctor in particular has taken an interest in me. This doctor is locally very well respected and has connections to faculty at the local M.D. and D.O. schools and has promised to help me network and find a relevant job if I moved to the state at the end of this month. This deal is sweetened by the fact that the cost of living is much lower than NY and my friend's family is willing to give me a great deal on an apartment.

On the other hand, I've spent about 1.5 yrs in a molecular research lab at my university and would love to build on my research experience and have applied to several research technician positions in NY. This past week I was invited to interview at one of the top research schools. The lab's work seems really interesting and the work would consist of techniques I've practiced throughout my previous lab experience. If I am awarded the position I'll likely move in with my parents to save money which I don't mind.

The issue is I plan on taking my mcat for a second time in July after having gotten a 26 in January and hope to be studying hardcore for the next month and a half. I am worried that a research position in Manhattan (I live in the boroughs) would prevent me from dedicating an adequate amount of time to studying. While if I moved to the midwest I wouldn't necessarily have to start working a job until after my mcat date as my landlord is willing to give me a break while I study and my dr friend has suggested I simply network with potential employers and other doctors while studying.

If it just so happened that I'm awarded this position in NY, should I take it? I'm particularly concerned about my mcat issue and the possibility of getting an md/do lor to put in with my med application if I were to move out of state at the end of the month. I love NY but I wouldn't mind leaving and really like the midwestern city in question.

I'd love some opinions or suggestions about my situation and greatly appreciate your time!!

You need to do gpa repair.

And also to actually study for the mcat like you mean it.

Bomb your interview with the research lab. No seriously though, just focus on the MCAT. The potential score increase (26 to ideally mid-30's, percentiles of course) will probably look better than the research. Plus you already have a year and a half of research under your belt. I would do some studying while you have the housing and time.

Concur with the others. The only two things that should be on your mind are GPA and MCAT. If you don't improve both of them, I fear for your chances of getting in anywhere.

That's what I was thinking, thank you all for the input so far.
