I have an offer from an anesthesia management company to join one of their groups. This group is located in a place where the payor mix is at the most 15% medicare/medicaid. They are offering a salary for the first 6 months but then its all production based. The issue is they are only paying $40/unit. The guys there now are working 80+ hr weeks.

Are these guys screwing the docs at this place big time? Please give me your opinion.

Most likely. They probably dont have a choice and the AMC knows it.

$40/unit is pretty good. In my group we get $33 and the partners are only making $35. If you're working 80hrs/week with minimal downtime you should be able to clear 400k depending on how much vacation you take. If there's a lot of downtime then it's a whole nother story

FWIW other groups in the area are offering $28/unit but IDK what the total payor mix for the various groups are

The AMC is takling about 1/3 of the collections. 33%. Is this a screwing? For you No. for me the answer is HEL$ YES.

Blade do you say that it wouldn't be screwing me because I am fresh outta residency? Also, I have seen numbers on average RVUs for anesthesia and $40 was at or just below the average with a high of around $128. This concerns me because this market is like I said well insured and self-pay. And if they are collecting way more than $40/unit on these docs then the integrity and transperancy of this AMC is pretty poor.

WTF? Around here it's 40 hours/week, 12 weeks vacation, great benefits, and salary is well above $500k. If I worked 80 hours/week I would expect to clear $1 mil.

Something ain't right.

DrRobert,
The more I talk with other docs where I am that seems more like what they are getting, albeit they are working more like 50-60hrs/week but they are making around 500+. As a new grad I don't expect to make that kind of dough but I do want to set myself up in the kind of practice where the potential is there. What state do you practice in, I am in AL but the job I am writing about is in CO?

At 80 hours a week you will be making 20,000 units a year. At $40 a unit you will clear $800k. But I cannot believe that anywhere with a 15% Medicare Medicaid can have a $40 unit. Our unit is just over $50 and we have at least 40% Medicare plus Medicaid. Something does not add up. You have not been given good info.

We hired a new grad last year. We are paying her $40 per unit for the first year, $45 the next and then she will be at 100%

Dunno what to say, that's just what I've heard from others in the area.........Most local hospitals are offering around the same, maybe it's a high medicare/self pay rate. Where are you located, 40 hrs/week for 500k w/12 weeks vaca would be real tempting

I would love to know what other people are getting/unit

Our annual average is $52/unit.

500k? I call bull s on that one.. NOWAY nobody is making that dr robert and seba.. NO WAY..

As always, the rates depend on location. The more "desirable" locations such as SoCal and NYC pay less (and of course have higher costs of living). So, this is just another lesson in "how important is location to you?"

$30-40/unit in Orange County,CA is typical.

With 15% Medicare/Medicaid, it should be more than 40/unit. They are paying you 40/unit, and keeping the difference between that and what the actual unit value is. See if you can find out what it is, which is the only way to know how much they are making off you, but I'm sure they keep it secret.

Yes his info is correct. The AMC is getting 65 plus per unit but paying them 40 per unit. This makes perfect sense to me.
