Hello all,
One of my friends just received her acceptance letter to USC dental school. Anyways, as a present, I wanted to buy her something that will have practical utility during her dental school tenure and career in dentistry. However, due to my ignorance, I have little knowledge on what would be a great present. I was hoping some of you who have been through the rigors of dental school could shed some light on the matter. My budget is flexible, but I was considering $300-$500. Initially, I was thinking about buying her a handpiece, since I've heard some school's tuition covers the rental of the equipment, so it would be her first handpiece really. But every school is different. What do you guys think?

Thanks, I appreciate it!

Why don't you get her a loupe? It's pretty standard thing to buy for dental school.

Loupes would be nice since you are thinking around $500. Many are more expensive than that, but even to put money toward purchase for your friend would be awesome. Unfortunately, it's not really something you can buy without her knowing, because she needs to be fitted for them. Another thing you could do is buy and articulator for her. Many schools rent them out the the students, but it definitely doesn't hurt to have more than what they rent out to you. Colorful mixing bowls and spatulas would be a nice (cheaper gift) as well. We have dark green ones, and I think it would be nice to have different colors. Back to the idea of a handpiece or articulator... another way to put the finishing touch on it would be to have her name engraved on it as well. I know at my school, I would love to have a comfy seat cushion for the days we have 8 hours of lecture.

Great ideas blankguy and toothfairy, I appreciate your feedback. I'm not really sure what an articulator does specifically (I presume it helps align the the upper and lower jaw), so I'm leaning towards loupes and a handpiece. Can you guys tell me which brand or maybe even a specific model you would suggest for either one? I wouldn't think you can rent loupes out since it needs to be customized, but the handpieces they provide you in school, are those rented out or purchased generally? Even if they're purchased, are they of sufficient quality, or lower-end ones?

Thanks again

Maybe it's best that you find some current students at the school your friend was accepted to and see what they think. You don't want to get handpieces, loupes, or articulators if they're already paid for by tuition fees.
