Hello,

I have a question for all of you dental students. I am currently applying to dental school for fall 2008 and I want to take some upper level classes to help me better transition into the dental school curriculum. I probably will not take more than 3 classes, so what will help me the most: microbiology, immunology, anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, sculpting or any other classes you wished you would have taken before matriculating.

Thanks in advance

Anatomy if the professor is good. My professor was a really nice guy but didn't structure the class very well (it was his first time teaching it). He tried new things and we just didn't end up learning too much. The only thing that seemed to stick was the cranial nerves.

Biochem is so definitely worth taking. Very glad I did because it gives you a head start so to speak. At least half the material you learn in d-school biochem you'll find in a college biochem course. So that's less time you have to study.

I would consider physio as well - again, if the professor is any good. I haven't taken d-school physio yet (next semester) so I can't say for sure how well college physio prepared me for d-school. I hope a lot.

Micro and immuno could be worth it. I might put micro over immuno since, at least here at Stony, we have an actual 'micro' course and not an 'immuno' course.

NAVY DDS and Streewolf,

Thanks for the advice. I felt like sculpting would be a waste of time too. I guess I will end up taking Anatomy, physiology and some microbiology or biochemistry. I don't know how well Anatomy is at our school - we get to dissect cats instead of cadavers or even chimps 😕 But I will try to make the best of it.

NAVY DDS, I am limiting myself to 3 classes because I am working a lot these days and this is supposed to be my year off 🙁 and I don't want to overload myself. I feel like one class per quarter is manageable though.

Medical terminology can be a very beneficial class. Knowing the latin roots of words is a great help in learning just about every thing else.

I took human physiology and biochemistry before I headed off to dental school, I thought those were very good classes to have under your belt. I didn't take human anatomy but I wish I had. Those are the three I would recommend. I took immunology as well. It can be helpful, but I'd still go for the first three I mentioned. I would also recommend a "fun" class like accounting. A little knowledge goes a long way in this business.

Thanks to everyone who responded! The info was really helpful.
