Hey guys. I am looking for some advice. I am interesting in a career as a pharmacist but I am a little confused on what would be the best way to go about achieving my goal. I am in Community College right now majoring in pharmacy in hopes that I can transfer to a pharmacy school.

My issue is that I don't know if my grades will be strong enough to get in. I don't really want to take this major and then fail getting into pharmacy school and not having anything to fall back on. I've heard that most pharmacy school applicants have a bachelors degree when applying. Do you guys think that it would be a better idea to drop my pharmacy program and get a bachelors degree and then apply? At least If I fail getting into pharmacy school I will at least have a bachelors.

I just don't want to spend several years working for something only to find out that it was all for nothing because as I said, I am going to school soley to meet the pre reqs. of the pharmacy school, but if I don't get in I wouldn't know what else to do. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Apply for pharmacy school whenever you are ready. If you don't get in right away, most of the pre-reqs you took will count towards a degree so you just have to transfer. Getting a bachelors first is becoming more common, but it's still possible to get in without it.

Ok. Probably stupid question , but what specifically should I major in?

Apply as early as possible... if you get in great if not that's ok... then you can maybe consider transferring to a 4 yr and working towards a bachelor's in maybe bio or chemistry or biomedical science... or whatever. Then you apply again... if you get in... ditch the bachelor thing and go to pharmacy school. If not... keep working to your degree and apply again.

If there's one thing I've learned, its that you shouldn't trust any academic counselor to know what you need or want to do. The best advisor for that is yourself.

This may seem strenuous but if you really want to be a pharmacist then you'll do it and probably be successful... eventually.

And if you don't really want to be a pharmacist... well... find another forum...

P.S. about the bachelor necessity thing... I wouldn't buy into that... true maybe half of all students who get in have a degree... but that means that the other half are just like you and me... eventually it may change... but not yet... All I'm saying is if you don't get in you don't want to sit out a year of school and lose your academic rhythm... you gotta have something to do.
