I am a sophomore in college right now and I need some advise. I am trying to do my best but with what I hear am constantly hearing horror where I go about getting into medical school. As of now I have a 3.5 gpa as a Business Finance major with pre-med, I work as an EMT Basic on an ambulance service and I have gotten around 1000 hours of experience there. I put volunteer work in at a ski hill as a ski patroler, and do volunteer work through my fraternity. Right now I am first semester organic chemistry which is going very well. However, My fear is the professor that teaches organic 2 prides himself on failing students. People drop a chemistry major because of him. I feel like I am setting myself up for failure going into that class next semester. My question is that if things don't go perfect will it be the end of the world? Also will my other things carry enough weight to lessen the damage? (I also own my own business too if that helps my cause any).

One mediocre grade will not sink your application. Is there only this one professor who teaches orgo 2? If so, since you already know that his class will be tough, perhaps you can decrease your extracurriculars to a minimum so that you can concentrate on acing his class.

You've got interesting ECs but at the end of the day, your grades need to be up to snuff.

You should not assume you will fail a class and other things will make up for a failure. That's simply not the case.

As much as people love to complain about how hard Orgo is, the course itself covers the exact same material almost everywhere in the country. There is absolutely no reason you should think you can't manage it if you are strong in Orgo I.

Set out for a kick ass grade in the class next semester - lose the mindset that you're trying to avoid failure.

My understanding is that grades and MCAT are most important. If there's any way you can work less next semester and make sure you pull off an A in orgo 2 that would be best.

Change your attitude and you'll be surprised at how well you can do. Also if you have the money, Leroy Wade's Organic Chemistry is an awesome resource for self study
