I want to go to medical school but bad performance may have doomed me?

I am 24... started my college education in community college where my grades were really bad..2 A's 4 D's 4 B's and like 9 C's (3 yrs) Then I xfered to a 4 year institution and have been trying to make amends for poor grades in community college but it's still bad...2 C's in chem a Withdraw and Fail in Calculus....right now my gpa in the 4 year college is 3.08 (biology major) and I have one more year to graduate.

I have not taken the MCAT yet, so far i volunteered in a hospital during the summer and doing psychology research.

Need some advice and/or feedback...kinda wish i didn't mess up but can't change the pass.

What is your overall GPA, including all grades in both institutions?

What would your GPA be if you only include the most recent retakes of each class?

You should probably familiarize yourself with DO medical schools since their application service will not include the first grade of any class you retook, assuming credit hours are the same or greater. Your application GPA would only include the most recent retake, though the other grade would still appear on the transcript. This policy would help you get your GPA into a competitive range more quickly. DO medical schools would still want to see a recent upward grade trend and proof that you can succeed in upper-level science classes.

I don't think you have much chance at a US allopathic med school with a recent GPA of 3.08 which is going to be even lower once the CC courses are calculated in.

cc gpa is 2.22 and recent 4 year university gpa is 3.08

i am thinking i might have to go to grad school..

You don't necessarily have to do Master's. Your undergrad GPA will still be considered for admission into med school. It might be difficult to get in MD schools as they look at all course retakes separate. For example, You got a C in Chemistry and you retook that course and got an A. MD schools will caculate your GPA using both grades. But DO schools only look at retake grades.

What you can do it retake all bad grade courses and finish your undergrad. Then apply to DO schools. But you would really need some shadowing experience and volunteer work. Do awesome on MCAT and you are golden.

All the best. 👍
