So I'm a Cali resident and I'd prefer to stay here for med school, but given how hard everyone says it is to get into CA med schools, I'm not sure how many out of state schools I should apply to. I figure my stats are pretty high, so I probably have a good chance of getting into a CA school, but I don't want to run the risk of not getting in at all. Plus, I don't have nearly as many EC's as I'd like. Anyways, what do you guys think of my list? Any I should add or drop? Also, should I bother with TMDSAS? I plan to narrow down my list, as I dont want to pay for/fill out this many applications.

overall gpa 3.99, science gpa 4.0 (UCSD)
40Q (ps 14, vr 11, bs 15)

1) chemistry/biology tutor (mid 2008-early2009)
2) hospital volunteer- 100hrs in radiology dept. (over last 7 months)
3) shadowing- 50 hrs shadowing pathologist
4) volunteer at local high school helping underprivileged kids w/ biology experiments (3 weeks in 2008)
5) mentor- worked w/ an on campus organization to help mentor incoming freshmen and transfers (2008-present)
6) research: working in a microbial oceanography lab. I just got this position and plan to continue research in the year off between graduation and med school

I realize all of these EC's are rather recent, but I didn't make up my mind until about a year ago that I wanted to go to med school.

Here's my list (in no particular order)
-UCSD
-UCI
-UCLA
-UCD
-UCSF
-Stanford
-USC
-Ohio State
-Michigan
-Washington University (stl)
-UMass
-Jefferson
-Tulane
-MC Wisconsin
-Emory
-Georgetown
-George Washington
-Tufts
-Albert Einstein
-NYMC
-NYU
-Mount Sinai
-Drexel
-Duke
-Penn
-Harvard
-Northwestern
-U. of Chicago
-Baylor
-Vanderbilt
-Johns Hopkins

thanks

Cut places you will be OOS (Ohio State, UMass). Don't bother with TMDSAS as you are a Cali resident. Also, I would go out on a limb and tell you to cut some lower/mid-tier schools that I think are pretty much a waste unless you specifically want to be in that part of the country (Tufts, Gtown, GW, MCW, NYMC, Drexel). Taking these out may leave your list a little top-heavy, but you are a very strong applicant and unless you have a significant personality disorder (I doubt it) you should get a lot of interviews that translate to acceptances.
