So I am just wondering if I could get some good advice from a few of you that know a little more than me about my chances. I am a New York resident, 24 years old and have a bachelors degree in social sciences. I graduated with a 3.598 but have a current overall of 3.54 due to classes I have taken since graduating. I have taken a few pre reqs for medical school but have not done so well.

Chem 1 and 2: b-/c
Chem 2 lab: B+
bio 1: b-
Anatomy/physiology: A-
Stats: B
undergraduate research 18 credits: A (counts on science gpa)
Micro Bio: C+

sgpa: 3.348

I still have the second bio, orgo 1 and 2, and physics 1 and 2 to take in order to complete the pre reqs. I am hoping that the grades I have gotten on these previous science courses will not destroy my chances. Now I have been told that taking pre reqs at a community college is very bad but I am already 50k in debt from my undergrad degree and don't want to spend a whole lot on completing them. I am just wondering if I do very well for the remainder of the courses if I have a shot at either MD or DO.

EC's:
Plant research 3 years no publications
Shadowed 2 ED docs
Shadowed anesthesiologist for a day
Worked as an anesthesia tech for the past year
Worked in a PACU as a tech for the past 3 months

I would be able to get a good letter from a DO and MD's due to the relationships have made with the Anesthesia Docs.

Any advise would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you
Josh

while you clearly can absorb some of the low grades you earned recently with the grades you earned in sociology, you won't have a good chance of entering medical school unless you can show you have the aptitude to succeed in science.

its really important that you you try to get stronger grades in the remaining pre-req's like o.chem and physics. This is important not just GPA wise but also to succeed on the MCAT.

You'll also need LOR's from academic faculty, a minimum of 2 from science professors. in this case, you'll want to ask professors who at least recognize you and you've gotten A's from, so they can testify to your abilities as a student.

More Bs and Cs in science will set you back further, but if you can turn things around and start getting near-As in the rest of the prerequisites, and maybe some upper-level science as well, then you still have a chance, depending on your MCAT score. DO seems more likely right now, where the average entering student has a cGPA 3.48, sGPA of 3.35.

Also your lab grades are becoming a crutch, they're another thing that's propping your sGPA and the adcoms will see through that. The high grades you get in lab especially won't matter if they ask you exactly what you did in that lab and what you were able to accomplish in it (publications/presentations) if in fact you have very little to show for it. I don't know if you're continuing your undergrad research, but if you are I would recommend cutting back and focusing on your science courses.

I mean if you don't include the lab grades, your sGPA is actually way below a 3.0 and that I think more accurately depicts where you are based solely on your pre-req's.
