I guess this has been discussed before but I will like to hear more information. My situation is the following:

I am going to attend a 4 year college after completing my AA in a community college. As many have advice, I decided to take only general chem and intro to physics in the community college because I can take upper division classes in the same field to erase any doubt.

However, I am having a problem with Organic Chem. The problem is that I need to take it on this fall because it is a prereq of some core classes that I need to take (change my major to Biotechnology/before was Math). So the problem is that all the sections of Organic chemistry in the 4 year college are full and they told me already that they can’t override and register me.

So, I was thinking in taking organic chem 1 in my previous institution which is a community college. I don’t have more classes to take because I was a math major and I have everything except the core classes of biotechnology which unfortunately Bio I and Organic I are prereq of most of them.

So far I just have two classes for fall: Bio 1 and Statistics 1 but I need more classes in order to get financial aid. The financial aid people recommended me to take Organic at the CC but my advisor told me that the director of the premed committee prefers people who take Organic at the 4 year college. Later she said to me that it was not the end of the world if I take Organic 1 at the CC.

So, what you guys recommend me to do

Are you hesitant because of the workload of full courseload + orgo, or because you're afraid it won't look good to the premed committee/medical schools?

If you think you can handle the courseload, and you have confidence that your CC does a good job of teaching orgo, go for it. Make sure your premed committee mentions why you took orgo at the CC in your letter and you're set.

PS: Your CC orgo course includes a lab component, right?

I don't know what your school is like, but at mine I could generally show up the first day of class and several people would have dropped so it was easy to register. Doesn't always work, but you could take the gamble if you really want ochem at the 4 year.

I don't see anything wrong with taking organic at the CC since you already spent a year to two years there. So, why not just slip in organic? Plus, if you are doubtful, just review with some classmates in that section for the MCAT.

thanks for the comments. Yeah the class has the lab component. Also, I will try to go the class the first day to see if someone drops. If not I guess I will take orgo at the cc because is the same professor at the university. Anyway, thanks!
