Just wanted some help in regards to where i stand

I'm applying in Sept 2007 to get in for Sept 2008.

What are my chances with the following (i'm working hard to get these when i apply)

1) 38 or higher on MCAT
2) 3.0 GPA
3) Tons of extracircular
4) Summer research and also during the study year
5) Volunteering in Africa for 2 months

I was just wondering what are my chance of getting into Canadian schools with the above stuff. I'm fron Ontario, Canada

I'd check out some of the school's websites.. unfortunately, being from Ontario doesn't help you out at all in Ontario schools (I'm also from ON).

Anyway, you basically only have Mac as an option - a 3.0 GPA is too low for all other schools in Canada.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. However, there's lots of hope in the international scene - you can get into Aussie schools, schools in the UK, Caribbean, and even in the US (although the US requires a high MCAT to go with your somewhat low GPA).

Good news is that you've got time to think about everything. Read through these forums, start your research early, and you'll be set to apply in the coming year..

Cheers.

And, um, proofread your personal statement based on several opinions. 😉

Good luck!

Erased from before - i will not type it up again: In essence, your extracurric is only important if you actually pass the 1st round of cut-offs which ranks you based on your GPA (i think) - if you cannot make the cut-off, which depends on the applicant pool - then your extracurric (which is outstanding!) doesn't not help you at all. It's good to be a great human being - which is what they make us all believe - but I have met some reall a**holes who got in with 3.77, 35 mcat, and minimal extracurric. If your academic record does not demonstrate that you have the ability to suceed and successfully complete their program (which depends on academic ability) - then your trips to africa does not matter to them. I realized this after I found out who was getting in and who was not - GPA and MCAT are the MOST important factors initially - then comes your essays and references but they know that alot of this will be BS. So while they make u think that these are important - your gpa, mcat, and interview score = total score = acceptance or not (if your score is ranked in the top 123 or whatever the class size is). They don't look at your application and say "oh, this was a pleasant man, he should get in" - you get ranked in a computer.
