I've been lurking around here for a while now, tons of great information. I'm not really proud that this is my first post. I've been a data entry tech for about 8yrs now in a long term care pharmacy. Recently , I've sold off everything I own worth anything with hopes to go for pharmd. About 2 months ago I've registered with a local school for my prerequisites for fall 08. I have gathered up all the college level math course books i could, and have been studying 4hrs/night - 5x/week after work, following advise from my advisor.

Here comes the bad news....after ignoring my friends for the last 2 months, i decided to go out with them. Got drunk , decided to drive, and got a dwi. I AM IN NO WAY ASKING FOR SYMPATHY, I KNOW WHAT I DID WAS WRONG.
I hate myself for doing it, but its done, I cant do anything about it. I was stopped not making a complete stop up the road from my house. I was going to pick up a friend that was stuck by himself, and needed a place to stay. I have a good lawyer and have no previous history for anything.

I have searched for an answer, but can not find anything on how much this will affect my pharmd app. I know I did something really wrong, but I'll be devastated if this affects the rest of my life. If anyone can give some insight, please give your opinion.

IDK much about your specific situation. All I can say is try and get dwi off your record which you should be able to with a good attorney. I am not sure how it will affect pharm d admissions with it on your record.

I wish you the best of luck :luck:

Firstly, welcome! I don't personally have any knowledge on how a DUI would affect an application but I have seen previous threads discussing criminal records. I am not sure if they are still available through the search function or not but there are threads that might be of help. Someone else might be able to also help advise on this. I know this is totally different but I have a friend who got her masters in criminal justice and right after graduation she obtained a job in the system (can't recall where exactly as she's since moved away) and she had not just one DUI but two DUI's on her record. 😱 Again, I know it's not the same thing but interesting to know.

Again, welcome! I hope no one is too harsh on you with this, no one is perfect and yes it was a dumb mistake but it's just that, a mistake.

I found this with a google search:
26. If I have a criminal record, can I go to pharmacy school and become a pharmacist?
Contact the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP) to determine if a felony conviction will prevent you from obtaining a license to practice pharmacy in a particular state.

Pharmacy schools may ask applicants to disclose any previous felony or misdemeanor convictions as part of the application process. A criminal record will not necessarily prevent you from enrolling in a pharmacy school; however, failure to disclose any past or pending charges may be grounds for dismissal. Pharmacy schools may require criminal background checks and/or drug tests in order to verify and individual’s suitability to participate in experiential education rotations, to confirm a student’s eligibility for pharmacy licensure, and to ensure patient safety. Contact your designated pharmacy schools directly for specific policies.

I think first DUI is a misdemeanor and stays on record for about 3 years. When are you planning to apply? It might/might not affect your pharm.D. apps. But a way you could lessen the damage is by doing something that pharm schools would love to hear. After you get it all sorted out, maybe join some kind of program or something in preventing drunk driving. I dont know what exactly though. So that also puts additional pressure on you to do really good in your classes. Show them that you are not irresponsible and you learned from your mistake. Its not as bad as you think, as you said its a mistake and evryone makes them. " To err is to human..."

Thanks for the responses, I didn't think they were gonna be that nice. I have already explained everything to my lawyer about school. Just really sucks that alot of the money that I sold my motorcycle,car...etc. is gonna go towards one night of drinking. I hope people reading this will learn from my mistake, its not worth it, especially with our goals.

I don't think DUI stays on your record 3 years. It's more than that. I knew someone had DUI once in 1993 and he just had another 2008. When he went to court, they told him "this is your second time". Wow, I thought 15 years it wouldnt be appeared on your record but unfortunately it's still there. This happens in Boston-Massachusetts. Maybe every state is different.
