Hey all,

I'm a current first year and I'm having a difficult time figuring out my "study style". I've been typing notes/taking notes on my ipad for class so I usually just study from those or type them in a Word document in a study guide/notes summary format. I've tried notecards but they take so much time and I never end up using them because it takes so long to write everything on them.

I have Bs and Cs right now...and I really want to do well on finals (which are coming up soon!). For this semester, I just want to pass (a C or higher - I know I won't fail any classes this semester) but I want to get new tips so I can use them to ace all my future classes.

Do you guys have any good study tips? How do you study? Any recommendations on how to retain information better? Any other tips on how to succeed in optometry school?

Thanks for helping! 🙂

I am also a current first year student. At the moment I am pulling A's and B's in all of my courses, but I still find it hard sometimes figuring out the best study tactics for individual classes as well. Some things that helped me focus my studying due to the amount of material: Focus on mastering basic concepts first. Even if you don't fully understand harder questions on a test, a solid conceptual understanding can usually allow you to deduce a solid answer. Unlike undergrad, rote memorization will only get you so far. This isn't about learn and forget anymore. So I have also found that teaching individuals/small groups has been a great way to relearn/learn to a higher extend both conceptual and harder topics in all of my classes. Hearing yourself explain things to others sometimes helps clear up confusion you may have on topics also. I started out taking a lot of notes and realized that writing every little thing down wasn't really helping it stick. Most professors post outlines/powerpoints etc. so I have focused more on just listening to them during lecture, then going to the outlines and making my own notes from them after I have heard it once before. When you're trying to write a ton, it's hard to pay attention to what they are saying/doing. This is some of the stuff that has started working for me at least. First semester is always gonna be a bit of a hurricane 😉 Hope this helps a little. Best of luck to you!

Are you doing something different than you did in college or high school? If so, why? 😕

Thank you! I'll def try these ideas out next semester. I just have a hArd time trying to figure out different study styles and what will work best for me. I'm used to just memorizing everything from undergrad and this is completely different- building on things we learned earlier In The semester and such. I think I'll record lectures on my ipad and just listen and follow along in class, then when I study for that class, go back listen to the lecture and take more notes on it

I think I'm just so used to memorizing that I can't seem to figure out how to actually understand the material so I'm looking for study tips from current OD students

Yeah, this requires a different style than undergrad for sure. You'll get a good system that works for you eventually. Mine isn't perfect by any means, it'll require some tweaking.
